ELECTRIFYING OUR EXISTING HOSPITALS FOR HEALTH & RESILIENCE

    • Canberra’s new all electric hospital wing

2 of 11

WHY WE NEED ALL ELECTRIC GAS FREE HOSPITALS

    • Hospitals are significant consumers of energy

    • 7% of Australia's total carbon footprint is from the health sector, 44% of this attributable to hospitals

    • The use of fossil gas in hospitals is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions

    • Getting hospitals off the gas and going all-electric is more energy efficient and sustainable

    • Energy efficiency will ensure that hospitals reduce their carbon footprint.

A ROADMAP TO ELECTRIFICATION

Healthy Futures has been advocating for a unified national approach to this issue, to help the industry and Governments understand where the opportunities are to create more resilient hospitals, lowering the cost of healthcare across the country and reducing emissions.

    • Federal funding for feasibility studies across nine pilot hospitals.

    • Nine hospitals nationally cover all climate zones (except Alpine) and cover Metro, Rural, Regional and Remote locations.

    • Two hospitals predominantly service First Nations communities

WHY THE URGENCY

    • We need a broad understanding of retrofitting challenges and opportunities in different locations and climates

    • We need to be ambitious, working towards a blueprint to electrify all hospitals and healthcare infrastructure across Australia

    • Healthcare in Australia contributes 7% of our total emissions, we need to be part of the solution, not the problem
