Module 14

Participatory Action Research

NOT SURINAME STUDENTS AND THEIR

ACHIEVEMENT IN PRIMARY SCHOOL.

2 of 19

Introduction

For module 14 we have the assignment to first give a short description of our main problem, define it and then do an action research about it.

Action research is based on reflection, data collection and action aimed at improving and reducing problem situations by involving the people who in turn take actions to solve the problem.

The problem statement that we have chosen is NOT SURINAME STUDENTS AND THEIR ACHIEVEMENT IN PRIMARY SCHOOL.

Most of the Non Suriname students ( Foreign Students) can not speak the Dutch language and understand it and perform poorly at school.

Also the tutoring that accompanies the students in the Dutch language is expensive.

We want to focus especially on kids from the OS Blauwgrond 3rd class because there are a lot of Brazilian students there thats why we will focus on the Brazilian students and we will focus on the subject Dutch because that is the key to all the other subjects.

We will do this research by means of a questionnaire for the teachers, a interview, pictures and other data.

On the basis of the survey, we can request further assistance from the Minister of Education.

My name is Rafia Chiragally and together with Raisa Chiragally we are the student teacher -researchers in this project. We worked in pairs. As a teacher I also want to help these kind of students. I know they can do well in school but there are some problems that are holding it back. And with this research I hope to solve these problems.

We would like to thank a number of people who participated in this research for their contribution and participation in the research.

The following persons participated in this investigation:

- Mevr.Damburg Eduards (het schoolhoofd) for the

Interview support and hospitality.

- The teachers from OS Blauwgrond

- The Brazilian students from OS Blauwgrond

especially student Eduardo from the 3rd class

The main question about this problem statement is:

How can teachers solve the bad Dutch result of Brazilian students at the OS Blauwgrond in the 3rd class ?

Adres from the school where we will do the research is Constant Vrede straat and the telephone number is (597)453113. We choose for this school because I work there as a teacher and so its easier to get permission to do the research and there are also a lot of Brazilian students at this school.

The story of my action research project

First we had to get the permission letter for the interview and on Tuesday the 27th of February and Thursday the 1st of March we went to the school for the interview and collected data..

We made a picture from all the Brazilian students from 3rd class till the 6th class. There are also Brazilian students in the substructure. But our focus is the 3rd class from the superstructure.

We also recorded a video from a Brazilian student Eduardo while he was reading and we gave 7 surveys to the class teachers from the 3rd class till the 6th class. After two days the surveys have been collected.

The problems we had during the execution of our project was that we had to wait for a permission letter before we were allowed to carry out the project, but because I myself am a teacher at that school it went a little easier. Furthermore, the class teacher did not want to give an interview, but she did complete the survey form. The plus points were the hospitality and support of the head teacher through her interview.

Questionnaire for the teachers

Zo nee waarom

Questionnaire for the teachers

11 of 19

For me (Rafia Chiragally) this action research project about the chosen problem statement was very instructive and I have also been able to get benefits.

I am also a teacher myself and I also had the problem of the Brazilian students about how I could help them, because every child has the right to education regardless of which group or culture you belong to. Now I have found my answers through this project and this project can be the basis for the final solution.

I (Raisa Chiragally) I am now a student from ICT in Education at IOL and as a student it always bothered me to see that Brazilian students are becoming dropouts because of the language and with action research i have tried to solve the problem and help those students and also how teachers can help to solve the problem.

Conclusion

After research, it appears that the Brazilian students who are on a tutoring work better than the Brazilian students who are not in extra lessons. Not all parents have money to pay for and therefore a structure needs to be set up at school where these children are helped and supported.

One of our solutions was that a teacher would be trained in Portuguese to translate for the students in the Portuguese but that this model has been rejected by many of the teachers because the students are in Suriname and have to master Dutch. because not only at the school but also for their further career they need the Dutch language.

So we have further researched and we want to use a teacher especially for the Brazilian students to help with understanding, reading, writing and understanding Dutch because that is much more effective for their future. The google translate as an ICT tool can also help them out.
