PART 1: WEEK 10 (5 marks)
1. Write a biography about yourself
PART 1: IDEA DEVELOPMENT (WEEK 10)
INTRO | My name is Khan Saif. Born in Malaysia but has been raised in HK for 15 years, I have travelled to many countries and explored many entertainment media to engage the beauty of visual arts. While art and design doesn’t SEEM to contribute much to society, I believe that when we make any objects, it all starts a design so appealing, so unique and cultivating that it can lend artists all around the world at least an eye. |
PARAGRAPH 1 | That being said, despite my interest in exploring art cultures, techniques and media, I love sleeping the most. Not just the fact that I get enough rest for a day, but also I get to dream something impossible, something unimaginable. |
PARAGRAPH 2 | If you ask me what is my favourite art style, it’d be art nouveau. |
SUMMARY | |
2. Write a statement about your work
PART 1: IDEA DEVELOPMENT (WEEK 10)
INTRO | I’ve seen Art Nouveau self portraits before, and I see the potential that these artworks ar flexible of describing ourselves. Just imagine we draw yourself near the circle, covering any themes or decorations that best describing ourselves better. For example, if we want the portrait has a theme of gambling as hobby, we’d add more themes such as poker faces, casinos, slot machines etc. |
PARAGRAPH 1 | What defines the artwork of these art nouveau self-portrait is that there are circles surrounding a bigger circle. Usually there are elements such as flowers and plants surrounding the circle as well as decoration, but for this artwork, I’m trying something a bit different to capture the night theme a little more. For example, ghosts and mists, for me, is a perfect fit for my artwork that describes my experience in night time. For this setup, I used the mixture of digital photography such as my portrait and the night background I found on websites, and some paintings and color pencil drawings such as the Art Nouveau circle and the ghosts surrounding the artwork. |
PARAGRAPH 2 | The art nouveau circle is filled with moons, referencing the moon phases, from new moon to full moon, from quarter moon to crescent and gibbous shaped moon surrounding the circles, somewhat resembles a clock, with a picture of an anonymous, imaginative city. The mist above the town is a reference of Vincent Van Gogh’s Starry Night, resembles a shape of minute and hour hand surrounding the clocks. |
SUMMARY | In summary, my artwork will have a night theme with elements of art nouveau self-portraits that sticks. |

FINAL POSTER | TITLE: THE NIGHT’S ABYSS |
| ARTIST STATEMENT: The animation demonstrated as the moon shines down, the circle of art nouveau covers the moon, similar to the progress of lunar or solar eclipse, while two ghosts surrounded me out of nowhere. Notice how the ghosts’ opacity are increasing and becoming more visible as the animation goes on. Once the art nouveau mirror covers the moon, it creates the effect of moonlight while “I” am disappearing, possibly disappearing to the night’s abyss or void, as the title’s suggested, suggesting “I” am in the middle of a dream, rather than in the real world right now. |
