Episode 6 Artifact

Since not all people had clocks or watches, the school bell was important for signaling that school was ready to start.

This school bell found at The Old Stone School weighs about 30 pounds and is made of bronze.

Episode 7 Artifact

This pencil sharpener was patented by Samuel Forrester in 1884. Once the pencil is put in the hole, it is then slid back and forth across a file to expose the lead. In the bottom picture, you can see the set of pulleys and ropes that help twist and spin the pencil creating a sharp point on all sides of the pencil.

Episode 8 Artifact

Students wrote their lessons on a slate board like the one pictured above. Slate is a kind of rock that can easily be split into smooth flat pieces. This slate board is called a quiet slate board. Quiet slate boards had their wooden edges wrapped with yarn, leather or other material. Students wrote on their slate with a slate pencil which was made of soapstone or softer slate and erased their boards with sheepskin.

Episode 9 Artifact

Pictured here is an original desk from The Old Stone School. It was made of wood and cast iron. The wooden top gave you a surface to work on and a tray for your slate pencil. There was also a storage compartment to hold your books.
