Troon Together Town Plan

Back in 2019 TDT applied for funding for a public consultation. We got £20,000 and SAC match funded this. Troon Together was formed as a steering group of various organisations across the town. Consultants were hired to carry out a public consultation. The resultant Troon Together Troon Town Plan came into being.

Community Opportunity

TDT first presented the opportunity of this Church becoming community owned 2023 within the Council Chambers at our public meeting.

A building that if it came into the community ownership would serve all residents from the very young to the very old.

It would also be a go to place for visitors to the town.

Troon Old Parish Church – As A Community Hub

History of the Church

Need to preserve the history of the Church.

  • Neo-Gothic building in red sandstone by Hippolyte Blanc and dedicated in 1895. Not only is this one of Troon's most significant landmarks, it is also one of Hippolyte Blanc's last and potentially best designs.
  • The stained glass of the Ascension window is by the Morris Studio; other windows by Gordon Webster.
  • Alabaster reredos depicting Moses, St Paul and the Last Supper has a finely carved canopy and stands above a mosaic pavement of the Paschal Lamb.
  • Richly carved pulpit, communion table and font.
  • Various memorials including the Troon Old Parish Church WW2 Brass Plaque dedicated to the men of the church who fell in the second world war.

Incorporating A Troon Heritage Centre/Museum

Troon has a rich history that isn’t showcased.

  • Ailsa Shipbuilding
  • The Kilmarnock to Troon Railway was an early railway line in Ayrshire/Duke of Portland
  • Golf
  • Rugby
  • Charles Marr

And the list goes on……………………………..

Other Possible Uses

Where better to raise awareness of our local talent than our own Community Hub with the provision of artist/craft studios.

Learning centre.

Renting space to other organisations that don’t have a base of their own.

18 of 26

Community Café/Public Living Room

  • Room with sofa’s where you can pop in for a cuppa , maybe some music, board games.
  • Welcoming safe space for all age and abililties.
  • Could be used by other organisations within the community as a meeting place for vulnerable members of the community to tackle lonliness and address mental health issues across the community.

Mobile climbing wall and soft play area.

Church Gardens

  • The use of the Church garden space could be put to good use as a community garden. Teaching kids to grow their own vegetables and using the grown produce for cookery workshops.

  • Room for a lovely big shed for the Mens Shed ☺

  • Use of gardens for a market like they have in Ayr or Kilmarnock

Also, we are working on another initiative that would benefit from community ownership of the Church as a base.

Cycling without age

Serving the old and disabled of all ages.

22 of 26

Show casing the initiative

Come along to Troon prom on the 15th June and 19th June 2024 and see what this is all about.

Can you imagine what this will do for the elderly and disabled within the community.

This Church would make a great base for the bikes and volunteers. These bikes could be used to ferry people from around the town to events being held in the Hub.

Going Forward

Let’s get back to the 2019 Community Action plan. Hopefully you’ve had a taste of what could be achieved by the community for the community.

  • Troon Community Council with a shared vision.
  • South Ayrshire Council.
