  • Photosynthesis- A process by which plants convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into food (sugar), oxygen, and water.
    • This process is the major source for oxygen in our atmosphere. Without it life on Earth would not exist!
  • Chloroplast- A cell organelle in plants containing chlorophyll where photosynthesis takes place.
  • Chlorophyll- A green molecule which uses light energy to change water and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen. A requirement for the process of photosynthesis.

H2O + CO2 + light → O2 + C6H12O6

Water + Carbon + sun → Oxygen + glucose

  • Respiration- The process by which the chemical energy of "food" molecules is released and changed into ATP (physical energy).
  • Mitochondria- Rod-shaped organelles in plants which converts the energy stored in glucose into ATP for the cell.

O2 + C6H12O6 → H20 + CO2 + ATP

Oxygen + glucose → water + carbon + energy

Transpiration

  • During the processes of Photosynthesis & Respiration loss of water can occur. This is known as transpiration.
  • Transpiration occurs when the guard cells of the plants’ leaves open up allowing for the water to escape.
  • The opening and closing of those cells allows for the plant to regulate this process not allowing the plant to lose too much water.
