فريج Fareej

A neighborhood; an area where people live near one another. It has distinctive characteristics; the number of houses varies between five and twenty. Traditional neighborhoods are separated by alleyways. They are named based on their residents’ family names, or nearby geographical sites. For example: fareej al ghanim is named after the Al-Ghanim family. Al-’eeyah was a pasture where young girls used to graze the animals. It was a scenic place with wells, grass and trees. Al-’eeyah was named after a sheep that died in the area. They are also named after landmarks that used to exist in the area. E.g., Bu Hamour was the name of a cemetery, which has given its name to the current freej of Bu Hamour. Nowadays this area is called Museimir, namely a small nail.

Farda

Peer, open flea market. Open space without shops used by ships to dock and for people to sell their products. Also an area where trading took and still takes place. Traded products include fish and vegetables. Very low prices of goods and very fresh products. All of these products were brought from neighboring Gulf countries. Fabrics and textiles were brought from India and Iran. Cotton was brought from Egypt and it was very expensive. Farda lasted from early morning till noon. In the past, it was primarily visited by men, but nowadays both sexes can be found there. People buy big amounts of stuff from there. There are no fixed prices (because there is no rent for the place), so negotation (muka:sara from yaksir = to break the price) is a favorite practice there. Farda was also seen as a place for socializing with neighbors at the port.

بيت Bayt

A house. Generally speaking, old houses were small in size and only consisted of one floor. A bayt is usually built facing northeast while the rooms are built on the east side of the house. This is all in order for the house and rooms to be facing away from the sun and dust storms. Simple structure material went into the making of these houses, such as mud for the construction of the house and wood for the windows and doors and palm fronds for roofing. The word bayt was used to refer to all kinds of houses, regardless of whether they are small or big. The appearance of each house indexed the socioeconomic status of each resident. Houses with 2 or more floors were considered to be the houses of privileged families and captains who were in charge of the fishermen.

بيت شعر Bayt Sha’r

A traditional bedu tent, which literally translates into “a house of hair”. It is used by both men and women. Socially, it represents the same characteristics of a normal bayt, but structurally and architecturally speaking it differs drastically from normal houses. Like regular bayts, it comes in various sizes from small to large. The reason behind its unusual name which makes reference to hair is because animal hair goes into the making of the material that the tent is made of. It is made out of wabar which is animal hair, particularly that of sheep, goats or camels. One of the reasons behind its construction is the nomadic life of the bedu who travelled extensively and were required to carry their homes with them.

Palm fronds put close together and secured tightly to make a haseer which is then used as a mat in food settings. Its plural is sarareed. In Qatar, it is mostly used as a flat basket to preserve dates. The sirwad is made of palm fronds soaked in water to make it more malleable, which are then sewn together using a big needle and thread that goes in a spiral pattern. It is characterized by its vibrant colors and decorations. The sarareed that hold the dates usually have a lid made of khous and braided handles. Family members usually gather around the sirwad to eat their meals, and when guests leave the place, women would gather around a sirwad for women only and men would sit around another one. The sirwad is rarely used nowadays and has been replaced by modern food plates. It is sometimes seen as a cultural decorative piece around the house. It is also used in Garangaoo (a traditional celebration that takes place in the middle of the holy month of Ramadan) as a gift and a decorative basket to hold sweets.

Introduction

How to use the book:

This bilingual book can be read in both English and Arabic. While the Arabic words start from the Neighborhood/Context and end with the Structure/Materials, the English words start with the Structure/Materials and end with the Neighborhood/Context. Both readings provide a different understanding of Qatari architecture where one starts from the outside to the inside in the case of Arabic while in the case of the English text the reader follows the opposite route.

Research Team:

The research team consisted of 8 researchers from Qatar University. The team consisted of Dr. Irene Theodoropoulou from the Department of English Literature and Linguistics, College of Arts and Sciences and Dr. Yasser Mahgoub from the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, College of Engineering. The participating students, who collected the bulk of the data documented here, include Amal Al-Abaidli, Moza Al-Thani and Nahed Al-Zoabi from the Department of English Literature and Linguistics, College of Arts and Sciences and Amal Hourani, Abeer Abou Nadi and Sara Al-Sada from the Department of Architecture and Urban Planning, College of Engineering.

Introduction

Introduction

This book contains the description of 100 architectural terms used in traditional Qatari architecture. Funded by the Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) with an Undergraduate Research Experience Program Grant (UREP 13-043-6-00), a group of researchers from Qatar University’s College of Arts and Sciences and College of Engineering conducted ethnographic interviews to elicit definitions of these terms containing sociocultural linguistic and architectural interpretation. Information about these words was collected through interviews with experts in the field and participants who lived in the time period when these terms were coined.

The authors hope that this study will introduce these architectural terms to both Qataris and expats alike, who wish to learn more about traditional Qatari architecture. In addition, it can be seen as a documented source of traditional Qatari architecture, which in the context of rapid globalization and its subsequent swift social change is deemed necessary to preserve a vital aspect of Qatar’s history and culture.

Chapters:

The terms are categorized under five themes pertaining to a certain field of usage and forming the respective five chapters of the book:

  • Neighborhood/Context
  • Exterior Facades/Elevations
  • Interior Spaces/Rooms
  • Furniture/House Items
