WHAT IS THE INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE (IB) DIPLOMA PROGRAMME?

The IB Diploma Programme (DP) is a challenging two-year curriculum for 11th and 12th grade students.

In grades 9-10: on the IB Path (Advanced Classes)

  • Designed for the highly motivated student seeking educational challenges
  • A holistic program: students take IB DP courses in ALL core areas
    • Different from AP, which is a la carte
  • Can earn college credit, gain scholarships, and help gain admittance to prestigious universities throughout the US and around the world
  • Available to ALL students in Leander ISD (not just those zoned for Leander HS or Vandegrift HS)

IB DP Students take 6 IB Subjects and exams in the following groups:

Group 1-Language A:

English: Language & Literature

Group 2-Language B:

French or Spanish

Group 3-Individuals and Societies:

History of the Americas/20th Century World Topics

Psychology*

Group 4-Experimental Sciences

Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Group 5- Mathematics

Math Applications (Pre-Cal and Statistics)

Math Analysis (Pre-Cal and Calculus, etc.)

Group 6-Arts & Electives*

Theatre, Visual Arts, Music, Computer Science

*Student may substitute Psychology or a 2nd science for Group 6

HOW DO I EARN AN IB DIPLOMA?

To earn an IB Diploma, a student must:

  • Achieve sufficient scores on IB exams for each of the six IB DP Subjects
  • ALSO: Complete three IB Core Elements
    • Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS)
    • Extended Essay
    • Theory of Knowledge

HOW DO I PREPARE TO BE AN IB DIPLOMA STUDENT?

  • IN 8TH GRADE:
    • Most IB students are in advanced core classes, including Algebra I.
      • BUT: if you are not in Alg. I now, it IS still possible to do IB
    • Be prepared to take 4 years of the same language
      • (French or Spanish)
    • Work on good study habits, turning in work on time

HOW DO I PREPARE TO BE AN IB DIPLOMA STUDENT?

  • IN 9TH AND 10TH GRADE:
    • All IB students are on the IB Path: advanced classes in all 4 core subject areas, plus foreign language
      • 9th: Advanced English I, Biology, AP Human Geography, usually advanced Geometry
        • AVID
      • 10th: Advanced English II, Chemistry, AP World History, usually advanced Algebra II
    • Staying on the IB Path is required, because it helps prepare you for the rigor of IB courses junior and senior year, AND it helps teach you how to balance workload

IB TRANSFER INFORMATION(I WANT TO DO IB BUT I AM NOT ZONED TO AN IB SCHOOL)

    • Any student in LISD may transfer to be a part of the IB Diploma Program.
      • LMS, RBMS, WMS, HMS, SMS, DANIELSON: you transfer to LHS for IB
      • CPMS: you choose LHS or VHS
    • Students are encouraged to transfer as 9th graders to enable them to participate in extracurricular programs and to best prepare for the IB program.
    • LISD transfer window (to apply for official transfer) is from mid-February to mid-March, 2024: select IB as reason
    • Transfer will be submitted for approval once you have completed the Statement of Intent Google Form, including all uploaded documents (Signature page, Course Choice Sheet)

HOW DO I JOIN THE IB PROGRAM?

  • Anyone that wants to challenge him/herself and get the best college preparation possible can join!
  • Recommended to attend:
    • LHS Start to Finish Night Feb 21st, 2024 5:00-7:30
  • You can now:
    • Go to IB at LHS, How to Join page
    • Fill out the Statement of Intent, including uploading the student/parent signature page
      • TRANSFERS: You will additionally upload an LHS Course Choice Sheet, AND you will apply for a transfer from the district (select IB as the reason)
