ANACS PROBLEM

SLABS

No information presented here is guaranteed perfectly accurate though it should be pretty close. As new information and/or unknown examples are discovered this work will be updated. This is meant to be used for research purposes as much as anything else.

Enjoy!

Note: Dates of Gens 6-10 are based on researching over a hundred thousand Heritage & other auction results from the last 20 years. When a new design showed up in results I estimated that its introduction was about two months prior to it showing up in an auction and this I believe to be accurate. I compared that with known NGC & PCGS generation changes and found that a new generation always showed up in Heritage auctions 1-3 months after the new holder was introduced.

No Coin Here

Generation 1 ANA Slab problem coin label does not exist. This is a placeholder as I didn’t want to start problem gen 1 (P1) designation with the Gen 2 holder and cause more confusion than necessary.

Gen P1

PROBLEM HOLDER DOES NOT EXIST FOR Gen 1

4 of 23

1944 Walking Liberty Half

This early problem coin slab features a yellow highlighted label to clearly bring attention to the issue. Production of gen 2 was for a short period from about June 1990 - 1991. The problem label was likely used for even shorter period. Only 5 having been cataloged as confirmed or having come to market since 2014 and 8 others from 2000- 2012 cataloged from HA auction records.

Gen P2

5 of 23

1907-S One Peso

Front label cert number now with all numbers otherwise unchanged from previous generation. Exact production date unknown but probably lasted a very short time in 1991 probably a few days, maybe a week. Only about 137 P3’s were originally made. Few likely survive today with only 5 having been cataloged as confirmed or having come to market since 2014.

Rarity - Very Rare

Gen P3

6 of 23

1834 Bust Half Dollar

Revised front label featuring a revised text and the addition of a barcode. Probably produced for a short time from about 1991-1992. These are scarce with only 29 having been cataloged as confirmed or having come to market since 2018.

Rarity - Scarce

Gen P4

7 of 23

1941-S Walking Liberty Half

Yellow highlight on label has been removed. As have the words “Not Graded”. Production started in 1991 or 1992 and ended in 1996.

Rarity - Uncommon

Gen P4.1

8 of 23

1839 Large Cent

This is the next gen slightly larger holder with the same front and rear labels as previous generation. Production date 1996 - ?

Rarity - Uncommon

Gen P5

9 of 23

1878-CC Trade Dollar

Revised front label with details & net grades added, replacing “Genuine”. Production date ?-1999.

Rarity - Uncommon

Gen P5.1

10 of 23

1923 Peace Dollar

Front label same as Gen P5.1 but reverse with gold pyramids hologram replacing the red ones. Production date from 1999 until about Sept 2005

Rarity - Common

Gen P6

11 of 23

1837 Feuchtwanger

This one is an odd one as it has “Genuine” and no grade given like the gen P5 but has the gold pyramids on rear instead of the red ones. From what I’ve seen and heard P6.1 was available upon request when grade was not required.

Rarity - Very Scarce

Gen P6.1

12 of 23

1921 Morgan Dollar

Details grade now indented on right and left, otherwise similar to P6. Production date from about Sept 2005 - Nov 2005

Rarity - Uncommon

Gen P6.2

13 of 23

1936 Walking Liberty Half

“Net grade” has been removed from label . Production date approx Nov 2005 - Mar 2006

Rarity - Occasional

Note: As in other gens with a barcode, sometimes it is missing when additional details are added to label as in this case

Gen P6.3

14 of 23

1896 Morgan Dollar

Front label background changed to two rows of blue pyramids. Production date Jan/Feb 2006 - Dec 2006. This holder produced alongside the new blue holder (Slab Gen 7.1/7.2). Problem coins were slabbed in the SWH instead of the new holders until Gen 8 was introduced.

Rarity- Occasional

Gen P6.4

15 of 23

1809 Bust Half

Front label has blue pyramid ANACS logo in three rows. Rear remains unchanged. Production period appears to be very limited, likely only used for a day or so, likely in Mar 2006 alongside Gen 7.0 blue holders. These likely came before Gen P6.4 but was not recognized until later in my research as such so it’s listed after Gen P6.4

Rarity - Very Scarce/Rare

Note: Only 35 of these have been cataloged as confirmed or having come to market since 2015. 15 of the 35 were from one “hoard” that came onto the market in 2019 from the original submitter. I’ve cataloged an additional 243 sold at auctions from 2006-2014

(Updated 9/5/25)

Gen P6.5

16 of 23

1976-S Eisenhower Dollar

Front label from P6.4 and rear has been changed to two blue triangles. Production date about Dec 2006 - Sept 2007. This is the last design of problem labels in the small white holders. It usually has a barcode but if too much info was needed for the label it was left off. As with P6.4 & 6.5 it was produced along with the new style blue label rounded holders (Gen 7)

Rarity - Occasional

Gen P6.6

17 of 23

2005 Bison Nickel

Produced in 2007? This holder is a mystery, It is a problem free coin in an old small white holder with the gen P6.6 problem slab front & rear label that was used from Dec 2006- Sept 2007. I’ve only seen one other problem free coin slabbed in this holder so I don’t know if there was some limited run done on request or it was a mistake. In any case I would say it’s quite rare.

Rarity

VERY RARE

Gen 7/P6.6

18 of 23

1932-S Washington Quarter

It appears that no problem graded coins were slabbed in this holder though I have seen this one labeled Genuine. I’m am not sure if this was a problem coin or that the customer didn’t want a grade. I’ve seen none listed with a details grade after sifting through hundreds of thousands of auction results. It is possible that some exist and if so would be very rare.
