Addition Properties
Three Properties:
1) Commutative Property
2) Associative Property
3) Identity Property
1) Commutative Property
The order of the addends does
not change the sum.
4 + 7 = 11 or 7 + 4 = 11
4 + 7 = 7 + 4
2) Associative Property
-The way the addends are grouped
does not change the sum.
-Parentheses are used to group numbers.
They tell us which part of
the problem to solve first.
Associative Property Con’d
(7+4) + 1 = 12
or
7 + (4+1) = 12
3) Identity Property
The sum of any number and
0 equals that number.
7 + 0 = 7
or
0 + 7 = 7
Property tips
Commutative: order does not matter
Associative: grouping does not matter
