Clean Burette Before Using

  1. Rinse with water by adding a small amount, rolling around, and then draining through tip.
  2. Repeat.
  3. Rinse with titrant the same way.

Do Not Refill the Burette If There is Enough Titrant to Complete a Second Trial

If you only need about 15 mL of titrant for a second trial, is there enough in the burette pictured above?

Which Pink is Correct?

Either! While the right, lighter one is more ideal, if one drop of titrant turned the solution from colorless to pink, the depth of pink is irrelevant.

Oh No! I’ve Measured Out Too Much Analyte!

No problem if it’s close to the volume described in the procedure. Just write down the volume you actually used. Don’t forget significant figures!

No problem! Talk to Fuller about back-titration.

Clean up

  • At the end, empty your titrant into your last solution and dispose of it down the drain with lots of water.
  • Clean your pipette with about 15 mL of distilled water.
