Look at Images!
Look at images of book covers and spines. What is the same about all of them? What is different?
The Element of Color
Each of these artists used complementary colors. Complementary colors are across from each other on the color wheel.
La Berceuse, Vincent Van Gogh, 1889… using mostly red and green
Ballerina and Lady with a Fan, Edgar Degas, 1885… mostly blue and orange
The Nativity, Federico Barocci, 1597… using mostly purple and yellow

Collaborative Project
Supplies Needed:
-Pencil
-Rectangular colored construction paper
-Black sharpie
-Coloring supplies
Choose two complementary colors. These are the colors across from each other. These will be the main colors you will use. One will be the color of the paper you choose.
I chose red (and pink) and green, with green paper.
Choose one of your favorite books. Write the name of it on your paper.
Include the author’s name if you have it. Add any pictures or decorations you want.
Remember to sign your name! You are the illustrator!
Finish your book’s spine by coloring it in! Use mostly the two colors you chose. You can add another color if you need.
Use any dry media!
Mixing white with colors can help them show up,
if you have a darker colored paper.
We will line up all the books!
It will look like a big bookshelf!

Creative Response
We have looked at different kinds of books. We talked about using complementary colors. We drew book spines together. Now, you will draw a book cover on your own! You can look at these pictures for ideas. You can invent your own if you want! It doesn’t have to be a real book. See mine on the next slide.
About 15 minutes
Creative Response Example
I created a book cover for Charlotte’s Web. I used a variety of colors for the title. I used light yellow and purple for the border and web.
