SETTING UP AN EMLID REACH RS2+

2 of 13

Resources

  • No manual you can download/print-https://docs.emlid.com/reachrs2/
  • Carleton College and UNAVCO have some good tutorial docs- https://serc.carleton.edu/details/files/399962.html
  • To set it up you have to download a “flash” software to update the firmware. Easiest on PC or Mac- https://docs.emlid.com/reachrs2/reference/troubleshooting/firmware-reflashing/
  • You have to hold the power button down while plugging in the USB cable. Note: Don’t use a USB hub!
  • The reach broadcasts it own wifi network, easiest to connect using a phone. You need to download ”Emlid Flow” app
  • When you first connect to the receiver, it will look like “reach:xx:xx” in the wifi on your phone and you will need the password: emlidreach
  • Note- Skip the steps (in the first-time setup) when it asks you to rename the receiver

Defaults

  • The reach comes with a default setting to start logging as soon as it powers on. This will give you bad data, turn that setting off in receiver/settings/logging.
  • The receiver wifi icon color is important!

Lights

  • Network lights are especially important to understand

Decide what kind of survey you want

  • PPK- does not require cell connection, you can collect raw GNSS data to post-process. This is the highest accuracy.
  • RTK- requires a cell connection but is recommended for the Reach receivers.
  • If you have 2 Reach units you can set up one as a base and one as a rover

GNSS Settings

On the Base

  • Positioning is set to static
  • Elevation mask angle is set at 15 degrees
  • SNR mask angle is 35 degrees
  • All satellites systems is selected
  • GNSS update is set at 1GHz.
  • Correction Output: select LoRa
  • Frequency 902.0 MHz
  • Output power 20 dBm
  • Air data rate 9.11 kb/s

On the Rover

  • Positioning is set to kinematic
  • Elevation mask angle is set at 15 degrees
  • SNR mask angle is 35 degrees
  • All satellites systems is selected
  • GNSS update is set at 1GHz.
  • Correction input LoRa
  • Same frequency and Air data rate as base

RTK Survey

  • If you have a RTK drone, Phantom 4 Pro RTK, Matrice 300 RTK, Matrice 30T, etc.
  • Set up the reach on a tripod, use your mobile hotspot to connect to the receiver.
  • NOTE: You need either 2 phones or a phone and tablet (with or without cellular). The phone is used for the mobile hotspot, the other will connect to the phone’s hotspot and used to control the receiver. If you have an iphone you have to select “maximize compatibility”.

RTK Continued

  • In the receiver settings/GNSS settings/Correction input select NTRIPS and enter in your NTRIP information, caster, port, username and password.
  • You have to select the correct ”Mountpoint”. This is the closest CORS station to you on the list. Do your homework on which one.
  • On the UAS controller in RTK settings you are in Missoula it will probably be MSOL_3.
  • Select “custom” enter in your NTRIP information, caster, port, username, password and mountpoint.

Selecting a “Mountpoint” or CORS station

  • Print this map and bring it with you!

Emlid Flow with RTK

  • If RTK is working correctly, the upper right will switch from single, to float, to FIX and turn green and stay green.

  • On the antenna, if the RTK is set up correctly the left hand light will be solid blue and the right hand light will be solid white.

Most Use Cases

  • Rover with CORS configuration
  • Using a CORS station- hopefully less than 100km away
  • No cellular required
  • Collecting raw GNSS data
  • Collect for 1 minute or longer at each GCP/CP

Emlid flow collecting raw GNSS

  • Emlid flow shows top right as single.
  • Positioning mode can be static (if you are collecting for a base, collecting for 1 min at gcp/cps with the rover) or kinematic (if you are collecting a line of points for a rover).

Troubleshooting

  • Don’t buy the Reach RS or RX unless you are sure they will work where you are surveying
  • Ask someone who knows the equipment.
  • Setup can be very frustrating
  • Read the tutorials by Carleton College
  • Go through the Emlid tutorials
  • Call or email Emlid or the distributor E38 Survey Solutions also has youtube videos.
