Why would I take a Dual Credit?

  • Plan to go to University or College
  • Not sure if post secondary education is for me
  • Might want to start an apprenticeship in High School or after graduation
  • Need career clarification
  • Need a change
  • This is your chance to try out a College course at no cost to you or your parents. It is a great way to figure out if post-secondary education is for you before spending thousands of dollars.

How do Dual Credits work?

  • With most Dual credits you will attend the College one day per week for 2 to 4 hours- we will look at possible timetables today
  • Courses only run for 16 weeks- much shorter than high school classes (Sept - Dec) (Jan - Apr) (Feb - May)
  • Integrated courses and Congregated courses
  • You will receive a high school and college credit
  • If you attend Algonquin after graduation your course may apply to the program you end up taking
  • Transportation is paid for - parking, bus tickets etc
  • Most materials are paid for - (culinary knife set, work boots for trades exploration etc)

Students don’t have to be in Cooperative Education to take a Dual Credit!

It is a good fit with coop but there are alternatives.

Senario 1: Emily is in Grade 11 and thinking about of going into Early Childhood Education and maybe teaching eventually. She isn’t positive and wants to clarify whether this is a possible career path.

Emily is taking two morning classes to finish her compulsory courses (Eng & Religion)and one elective Art course in the afternoon. She is thinking of taking a dual credit course and has applied for:

1st course “Introduction to Child and Youth Worker” Mon from 6-9PM.

Thurs from 1-4 PM.

  • Barriers - “Transportation, Fear of Change”

  • Support - Co-op teachers, and the College/Dual Credit support teacher. We have had many students who have never had a part time job or have not taken a bus before attend the College and succeed.

  • There will also be many other students from our Board taking courses as well. This year we have over 50 students taking Dual-Credit courses.
