What is a colony?

colony: an area that another country controls

Why did England establish colonies

in North America?

Mercantilism:

Economic system where a country would accumulate wealth by controlling trade

  • Colonies provided raw materials to mother country

  • England would manufacture goods and sell them back to the colonies (and other countries)

  • Colonies were limited and could only trade with mother country

  • mother country was able to get cheap resources

RULES:

  • The goal is to get all 13 colonies correctly into the 3 regions without any extras
  • No technology is allowed. Tables must be clear
  • Student raises hand to tell me a colony and where they want to place it.
  • Student may raise hand to erase or “delete” a colony from a given section
  • Student may raise hand to move a colony from one section to another.
  • Limit of one move per turn
  • 6:00 mark 1st clue
  • 10:00 mark 2nd clue (every 90 seconds)
  • 16:00 3rd clue (every 60 seconds)
  • Use problem solving skills
