WelcomebThis morning we are so happy to welcome an exciting gathering of municipal leaders, expert speakers, the Climate Network Lanark team and a very special group of Lanark citizens who recognize the importance of the energy transition. As a step in our journey of reconciliation, we recognize this morning that we are meeting on the unceded lands of the Anishinabek people and the Algonquin people. We have so much to learn and unlearn as we move towards reconciled relationships with all Indigenous peoples. Scott Hortop, Chair, Climate Network Lanark

Why we are here today …

  • Greenhouse gases are warming the planet and destabilizing weather. All of nature is under threat. Humans have exceeded 6 out of 9 planetary boundaries.
  • An energy transition is well underway: fuel switching away from ancient sunlight stored as fossil fuels to hydro generated electricity, nuclear electricity, solar photovoltaic and wind power.
  • The centralized is becoming distributed.
  • Acting as responsible individuals or as elected leaders, we are each making daily energy management decisions.
  • We want today’s discussions to help you make informed decisions and seize opportunities.

Steve Lapp Former Clean Energy Consultant & Professor

Taking Ontario to a near zero carbon economy is doable, and will take about double the electricity we generate now. The good news is that our existing fleet of gasoline and diesel vehicles and fossil fueled heating systems are horribly inefficient when compared to electric vehicles and heat pumps. How much solar, wind and batteries would take us to a zero carbon Ontario and what will it cost, and save.

2016 Financial Post - Canada’s electricity grid is stuck in a pre-Internet age, an era when carbon pollution wasn’t on anyone’s radar and energy was cheap. Necessity and consumer demand has paved the way for cleaner energy, but getting renewables to operate on these antiquated grids is like sending texts using Canada Post.

Smart grids have been helping to bring electricity delivery into the 21st century. But as utilities and technology providers race to develop solutions to optimize centralized, century-old distribution systems not designed to accommodate two-way power flows and highly variable distributed energy resources (i.e. small-scale power sources), smart grid software engineering company Opus One Solutions believes it may have the answer.
