CORALS AND CORAL REEF

  • Corals are skeletons of tiny marine animals called “Polyps”

  • When the polyps die their skeletons are left and other polyps grow on top of the hard skeletons which grow higher and higher and leads to the formation of “Coral Islands”

  • The Lakshadweep Islands located in the Arabian Sea and off the coast of Kerala are the Coral Islands

  • A coral reef is an underwater  eco-system characterized by reef-building corals. Reefs are formed of colonies of coral polyps held together by calcium carbonate. Most coral reefs are built from stony corals, whose polyps cluster in groups.
