Storage Guidance Tool

This tool scans a University of Michigan researcher’s files to suggest the best storage method for their data. The suggestion includes graphs and statistical summaries to aid in visualization.

Problem

ARC-TS offers 3 primary storage options to researchers: Turbo, Locker and DataDen. Each storage solution has a different price and is tailored to a specific scenario. There is currently no automated tool to help researchers decide which to use.

Methods

Results

• There is now an easy way for researchers to determine the best storage method for them.
• Researchers can easily visualize the attributes of their files.
• ARC-TS will better be able to support researchers using the information from these scans.

To solve this problem, the tool works in two stages. First, the researchers files are scanned for their attributes (file size, last accessed times, and last modified times). These attributes are sent to the server where the information is processed and added to a webpage. The researcher can then access the webpage and see their storage suggestion and data visualization.
