  • the front office is your first line of contact unless it is confidential or an emergency.

  • your child’s content teacher is next in line.

Contact Sunny/Alaina if you don’t get a response from one of the above w/in 48 hours.

Feel free to contact anyone directly if necessary by email. Please do not expect responses after 5pm from teachers or 6 p.m. from administration. If it is an emergency, please call 911.

Email, & Communication Expectations

Emails are our most common method of communicating with our students and parents.

Robo calls are also sent out.

All students can access their school email through gmail.

Student email: Firstname.lastname@newharmonyhigh.org PW may be reset by emailing office@newharmonyhigh.org.

Please read emails and make sure your email address, address and phone number remain updated.

Students miss out on deadlines, scholarship opportunities, and class information because they don’t read or check their emails. Parents often miss important messages.

Students will be encouraged to check their emails daily and I encourage you to check your emails as often as possible. It keeps us all in the loop with each other.

Parents, if your email or phone number changes, please contact the front office.

We value our time together, and we work best with the support of our teachers and other students. The project-based nature of the NHH program makes daily attendance extremely important. We want you to be with us at school! And we want you to be part of the projects and work happening at New Harmony. Any projects or work can and should be finished for the course missed.

Please be mindful that SEAT TIME IS REAL. The state mandates that students are not to have more than 10 unexcused absences per class. If a student has more than 10 unexcused absences, he or she will be required to complete mandated seat time on their own time (at home, during lunch, after school, and on weekends).

If seat time is not completed, your child will be required to attend summer school, retake classes or potentially fail for the year.

See handbook on slide 14 for full attendance policy

BE YOU. But also, be mindful you are in a learning environment.

Below are items of clothing that will NOT be accepted::

  • Slippers/Slides
  • Pajamas or pajama pants
  • Apparel of other High schools
  • Durags/Bonnets (after breakfast)
  • Exposed bras, bralets, sports bras, crop tops, or shirts that show an excessive amount of skin
  • Stomach/belly button showing
  • Drugs, guns, offensive language, hate group messages on clothing
  • Bodysuits as independent clothing
  • Compression shorts/shorts or pants that show the outlines of private areas
  • Shorts that expose the bottom of the buttocks
  • Backless shirts
  • Clothes that are see-through, exposing body parts

Students who break the dress code may be asked to change shoes or clothing with school provided pieces, or call home for a change of clothes.

Repeated offences may result in after school TABOO.

Phone/iPad/Smartwatch & Wearables Policy

  • 9th & 10th: no phones/ipads/smartwatch during the school day AT ALL (unless instructed by a teacher for academic use).
  • 11th and 12th: no phones/ipads/smartwatch during class(unless instructed by a teacher for academic use). Phone/iPad smartwatch usage allowed during lunch. Respectful and professional usage required.

Why iPads and Smartwatches??? Because they are used as phones.

Headphones/ earbuds are not allowed in class.

The bottom line…these devices are a distraction. They take away from socialization and engagement in learning. There is no reason students need them during lunch or class.

Seniors are allowed to have devices as a privilege. As a school, we find that there is more phone drama with underclassmen vs upper during the school day. This is why upperclassmen have permission to use them at lunch.

Parents, if you need to get in touch with your child, please contact the front office. If there is an emergency, you will be contacted immediately.

If students are caught with one of these devices, it will be confiscated for the day. We rarely have people refuse to give up their phones. If your phone is confiscated, you will get it back at the end of the day.

Chromebooks

All students will have access to a Chromebook while in class.

Students will only take computers home on a case by case basis.

  • Students are responsible for damaged or missing computers. All families are encouraged to pay the NHH Chromebook Insurance fee ($30) in case a device is broken or misplaced while in the student’s possession.

NHH Chromebook policy and contract are attached here. Please sign and return by August 22, 2025.

Transportation

School Bus

  • Hub stops should be available by Aug. 3rd
    • We use hubstops because it is a safer practice and shortens length of the busride.
    • We do not provide hubstops within a mile of the school or outside of the parish.
    • Folks outside of the parish can choose a hubstop within the parish.

  • Please email leslie.martin@newharmonyhigh.org for all transportation questions, issues, concerns.

Pick-Up/ Drop- Off/ Student Drivers

  • Students are to be picked up on either Esplanade or Moss Ave.
  • Please DO NOT:
    • Pull in parking lots to pick up or drop students. Lots only allow one car in and out at a time, so if you pull in, you block others.
    • Park in school bus lane.
  • Student Drivers are allowed to park on the street on Esplanade or Moss OR in designated spots available on the riverside Esplanade lot.
  • No student drivers should park on the City Park side of Esplanade lot.

Bus Behavior & Consequences

The bus company has its own right to refuse service for disruptive or disrespectful language and/or behavior as it is a privately owned company,

New Harmony will also issue consequences for the following behavior:

  • Repeated cursing or vulgar language on the bus
  • Physical or verbal threats on the bus
  • Standing up on the bus while the bus is moving
  • Calling people (including parents) to meet you at bus stops to handle conflicts. (This is an expellable offense.)

Please remember the bus is an extension of the school.

Curriculum Overview

Mission: New Harmony High School educates diverse problem solvers rooted in their communities and informed by a greater social and environmental context.

Curriculum Overview - Looking Deeper

  • Students graduate as individuals who practice resilience and understand ecology -- (the interconnectedness of people, land, air, and water)

  • Students are prepared for college, careers, and beyond knowing they have already made a significant impact here in Louisiana.

  • Students will engage in unique educational frameworks designed for deeper learning experiences.

Examples: advisories, community partnerships, PPBL, expedition-based learning, etc.

20 of 35

Theoretical Framework of New Harmony

  • New Harmony High School will assess much of student learning through problem-based, project-based, and environmental learning.

  • The goal of this framework is to connect students the unique challenges of New Orleans and the Gulf South through mission-aligned projects explicitly focused on building a more equitable, resilient and environmentally sustainable community.

What do we do?

  1. Assess students’ skills and determine their educational needs.
  2. Adapt general lessons to meet students needs
  3. Develop Individual Education Programs (IEPS) for each student
  4. Plan activities that are specific to each student’s abilities.

How do we do it?

With the help of parents and teachers.

If you believe your child is struggling academically or behaviorally, please inform your child’s advisor or teacher of instruction. They will put in a R.T.I referral for your child. To determine the level of assistance needed.
