What is Crystal Innovation Day?

  • Crystal Innovation Day (CID) is a day about student choice.
    • You choose what you want to learn.
    • You create & provide evidence of what you have learned.
    • You share what you have learned with your classmates.

  • I am very interested in architecture and buildings.
  • I am going to research and learn about the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France.
  • I will create a model of the Eiffel Tower using popsicle sticks and toothpicks.

  • I am interested in reading and writing music.
  • I am going to research music composition.
  • I will create a piece of music to perform.

  • I am interested in reading novels and watching movies.
  • I am going to research what goes into movie advertisements.
  • I will create a set of 3 different posters for a movie of the book.

Partnerships?

  • No – this is an individual learning project.
  • The only exception would be something where you must work together to create something (like a band creating a song to perform).

What about my other classes?

  • You will begin and end your day in your first period class (Homeroom ).
  • You will be going to PE classes at specially scheduled times.
  • The rest of the day, you’ll go to you assigned “Workspace.”

Will I be able to see what others are doing?

  • Yes, you will end your day in your Homeroom and will be given time to see what people in other areas are working on.
  • You will be presenting your project to your Homeroom class.

Can I bring in supplies from home?

YES!

    • You MUST have parent permission to bring any supplies from home.
    • Here are some examples of the kinds of supplies you may bring in:
      • Markers, paints, brushes
      • Sewing / craft supplies
      • Legos or other building toys
      • Your own books, comics, etc.
      • OTHER IDEAS? – Check with a teacher AFTER you’ve written your plan.

Can I bring in technology from home?

YES!

    • YOU MUST HAVE PARENT PERMISSION TO BRING ANY TECHNOLOGY TO SCHOOL.
    • You may bring your own laptop, smartphone, or tablet on the day of CID only.
    • You need to bring in your own cables, chargers, connectors, or batteries because we cannot provide them.

Can I use other Workspaces?

  • You will be assigned a “Workspace” (classroom) based on what kind of project you are working on—you’ll be with others working on similar projects.
  • You will be in your Workspace for most of the day.
  • If you can show a special temporary need to go to another teacher or the library, you may get permission from your Workspace teacher.

CID Expectations

  • You are expected to produce Quality Work! It should demonstrate your best effort.
  • If you finish early, you must have a back-up plan to use your time constructively on an extension activity.
  • Your best No-Excuses-Cougar behavior is expected at all times! Inappropriate behavior will result in removal from the activity.
  • You must follow all school rules. If part of your project requires exemption from a rule, you must have permission before you come to CID.

  • Week of May 20th – Start bringing in non-technology supplies.
  • Tuesday, May 28th – All non-technology supplies are due at school.
