Being a School Volunteer

The mission of the LAUSD School Volunteer Program is to enhance the school’s learning environment and educational program by utilizing the talents and resources found in our local communities.

What Do Volunteers Do?

  • The administrator/designee will work with you to find an assignment that utilizes your knowledge, talents and gifts so that they strengthen the school community.

  • Once assigned, both you and the administrator/designee will determine if your assignment is the best fit. If not, it will be modified and changed.

  • If you do not feel comfortable in an assignment, you may notify the administrator/designee and ask for a new assignment.

Common Volunteer Activities

  • Assist on the campus/playground

  • Support the Safety Valet Program (volunteers must be trained)

  • Assist parents by providing guidance to navigate Parent Portal

  • Assist in the main office to maintain a welcoming environment

  • Support and promote Parent and �Family Center programs

Discontinuation of Volunteer Service (BUL-6746.4 pg. 11)

Schools may discontinue a person’s volunteer service when the volunteer:

  • Poses a danger or threat to staff, students, or other adults.

  • Violates the privacy of students or any other person on the school site.

  • Fails to follow District policies such as the Respectful Treatment of Others Board Resolution, discrimination or harassment policies, the LAUSD Code of Conduct with Students and the LAUSD Employee Code of Ethics.

  • Fails to abide by the signed Volunteer Commitment Form.

  • Has been issued a disruptive person letter during the current school year.

Neglect

Neglect is a failure to provide for child’s basic needs. This includes basic physical, emotional, and medical needs.

If a caregiver fails to protect a child from harm, this may also be neglect.

Emotional Abuse

Emotional abuse is any attitude, behavior, or failure to act on the part of the caregiver that interferes with a child’s mental health or social development.

Emotional abuse can be verbal, mental and psychological and range from insult to extreme forms of punishment.

Physical Abuse

Physical abuse is any non-accidental injury to a child. An injury is not considered an accident if the caregiver’s actions were intentional.

Sexual abuse is a specific type of abuse in which an individual engages a child in sexual activity.

What is grooming for sexual abuse?

Grooming is when an individual builds a relationship with a child in order to sexually abuse them.

Possible Signs of Grooming

  1. Touching that is intimate or sexual in nature;
  2. Personal or social media interaction with student;
  3. Meeting a student away from school grounds or hours;
  4. Giving gifts or spending extra time with a student in nonsexual ways; and
  5. Sexual or personal oral or written comments made to a student.

  • Seeking out time alone with the child
  • “Accidental” sexual touching, hugging for a long period of time or back rubs
