Things you will probably need

  • You will need a battery pack to power the M2 on the drone or in the field
  • The one I have is small and light, gives out 3000mAh at 5V
  • Note: the microUSB cable that comes with it will NOT work for flashing your M2 as seen on the next slide
  • https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07JZCZSH9
  • Attom Tech Dual USB Output Super Slim Power Bank Ultra Thin, 3000mAh Portable Charger Mini External Phone Battery Pack Small Dual Outlet, Emergency Phone Power Backup (Black)
  • You will probably want some industrial grade Velcro and some carbon fiber to rig this onto your drone. Maybe zip ties if you are installing it semi permanently
  • They suggest keeping the antenna 6” above the drone so you have to be creative about mounting it without it hitting the props and mounting the battery pack and M2 without messing with your center of gravity

Things to remember

  • You need a cellphone to create a hotspot and to get NTRIP corrections.
  • You need a separate phone or tablet (cellular not necessary) to control the M2.
  • Don’t use the cellphone to control the M2, only to do the hotspot
  • Use 1 tablet to control each receiver (reach basestation, reach rover, or reach M2 for rtk).

Firmware (This part you can do inside with antenna disconnected)

  • Download Emlid Firmware Flash Tool
  • Tips:
    • It seems to only work on a PC
    • Do not use a usb hub, needs micro usb to usb directly into the computer
    • Get a paperclip for this step
  • Open the Flash Tool, and select M2 from the dropdown and hit next
  • This is a pain, but you have to use the paperclip to push down the small reset button in a hole under the power light on the M2 while simultaneously plugging the usb cable into the PC.
  • If it doesn’t recognize it immediately, get another microUSB to USB cable
  • If it works it will recognize it, ask if you want to download and flash the software, select yes.

Setting up the M2 for the first time (You need to do this outside with antenna connected)

  • You have to do this step using the cellular hotspot that you will use in the field
  • If you don’t have it download the Emlid Flow App
  • Power on the reach
  • On your tablet wifi settings select the M2 (on mine it shows up as Reach:4E:55)
  • Open up emlid flow and it should show up as an available receiver (Mine says Reach 192.168.42.1) and it shows the icon to the left showing it is an M2.

Setting up for the first time

  • Basic process is to connect the tablet to the reach M2 wifi, then rename it if you want, then enter in the info for a wifi hotspot or cellular hotspot to get updates
  • When you choose set up reach, I usually skip setting receiver name
  • Then in the setup dialog enter in the name and password of either:
    • A wireless network
    • A cell phone hotspot
  • It then tells you to connect to that wireless network or cell hotspot on your tablet in settings (this connects both your M2 and your tablet to the same network)

Setting up

  • Exit Emlid Flow and Reopen
  • If it worked it will automatically bring up the #3 of the update dialog, download something, say reach is set up, and ask for the privacy policy approval (if not, start back by reconnecting the tablet and signing into the M2 wifi).
  • Now get into the settings of the M2
