Issues specific to high-risk youth in that community as it relates to precautionary behavior.

  • False sense of confidence regarding their safety
    • Most who get COVID-19 recover and many are asymptomatic
    • Believe mingling with others in large groups, attending parties, not wearing masks, and ignoring community pandemic guidelines will not seriously endanger them
    • Many may pass the illness to others unknowingly (Maragakis, 2020)

  • Poorer communities are less equipped to deal with the health and financial consequences of COVID-19
    • Leads to employment in high-risk industries and occupations (Hawkins, 2020)

Data on current youth attitudes in the community

Attitudes toward COVID-19

-Underestimate risk (58% see it as less of a risk) (ipsos.com)

-Get misinformation from social media

-Age group (18-29) least likely to participate in preventative measures (Barone, E. Times.com)

-Concern over mental health

-anxiety, depression, disruption to sleep

-spike in symptoms related to COVID related news reports

-Concern over future, especially over education

Attitudes toward the Vaccine

-Low rate of vaccination in 12-15 year-old group (mass.gov, p8)

-Those under 18 need parent/guardian consent (Finucane, M & Huddle R)

-Less worried because parents and grandparents have already been vaccinated (Finucane, M & Huddle R )

-More susceptible to misinformation on social media (Satariano, A.)

That’s the formula for hyperlocal buy in.’” (Lambert, 2021)

Takeaways

  • Culturally-competent care
  • Bringing the vaccines to the community members
  • Fact-checking myths and common concerns
  • Familiar faces

Strategy

  • Our main approach is social media outreach because of the targeted youth demographic
  • Misinformation is everywhere online and we want to be able to combat that in an easy to understand way like infographics
  • We want to provide reliable resources and information to young people who may not know what is true or false about Covid-19 and its vaccinations

Participatory Action Research

  • Children and youth involved in PAR have increased knowledge about the issue
  • Creates increased sense of belonging to community
  • Changes in power dynamics between providers and youth served
  • “Organizations developed awareness and advocacy campaigns that were informed by the perspectives of the children and youth on services provided to them” (Shamrova & Cummings, 2017, p. 406)
