What is the order of events in a Pōwhiri?

Whakaeke - gather near the entrance - make sure you are ready, stand so the mana whenua can see you are ready.

Wero - Haka wero don’t always happen. If it does, it is the first thing to happen. After the wero, a leaf will be placed. Once it is picked up, the wero is over and the karanga can begin.

Karanga - the calling, mana whenua begin this and manuhiri reply, manuhiri move slowly toward the Marae area during karanga.

Whiakōrero - the formal speaking part of the process, Ngai Tahu use pāeke, some other iwi uses tauutuutu. Waiata always supports the whaikorero.

Next comes the hongi and hariru.

After that the hākari takes place. The point of the hakari is to whakanoa, so we are no longer tapu. Kai is used to break the tapu.

Mihimihi comes after the hākari.
