Engage: Show different animals on worldbook online and let kids explore different animals. Fill out the animal report questions.

Introduce: Review the vocabulary and introduce lesson by watching the Wild Kratt’s Epidsode (9 minutes) Show the Tortoise and the Hare sequence cards and talk about racing and who would win.

Model: How to use the different Events: When Clicked, When Flag is clicked, and When touched, waits, and speech bubbles.

Model: How to code a dialogue between two characters using the wait tool. Show how long the wait actually is (10=1 second, 20=2 seconds) Discuss how to put the dialogue into the correct sequence.

Gallery Walk: Have students walk around and look at each other projects. Have them give a compliment and ask a question. (hearts and wishes)

Debrief: Ask students questions about what they saw in their projects? Ask them how they debugged the problems? Ask them what other things could they create? How could you have the other animal win?

  1. Read several of the picture books Who would Win by Jerry Palota and discuss animal traits. Students can write facts about their animals.
  2. Add a Third Spirit to join in on the race.
  3. Create an Adobe Spark about the animals you choose to do for the race

(Sample Adobe Spark Project).

  • Discuss with another student why you think which animal would win.
  • Discuss perseverance and persistence and talk about what happens if you lose? Could you try again? Could you try something different. What would would you need to do to have the other animal win in your program.
