Calendar

Each month, we’ll make a new calendar together and talk about holidays or special dates in ss’ families. Add in any important dates that students mention. There are two goals for this calendar activity:

Community building - for students to share about events or occasions that are important to them, and for classmates to learn about each other.
Raising awareness about topics of equity and social justice, especially related to heritage months. (For this month, Sept. 15-Oct. 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month. Ss may ask what this means!National Hispanic Heritage Month is annually celebrated from September 15 to October 15 in the United States for recognizing the contributions and influence of Hispanic Americans to the history, culture, and achievements for the United States.

Take your time to invite Ss to share. Since you are a small group, you could call on each person and ask them if there is anything special that they celebrate or are looking forward to in October. Model by sharing if there is anything special for you in October. As a student shares, ask some follow-up questions and invite them to share details, especially if it is a holiday that not everyone in the group knows about.

Examples of things Ss might share:

A holiday in their country, culture, or religion
A birthday in their family
Something specific they are looking forward to/preparing for this month, or a major appointment like a job interview or citizenship interview
A vacation they are taking
An American tradition they know about (the calendar starts blank on purpose so the topics of discussion come from the students)
