The crops grown are cotton, sugarcane, cocoa, jute, bananas, tea, coconuts, palm oil, coffee, rubber, and tobacco

4 of 70

What type of climate and land is required?

Tropical/Sub-Tropical climates, this type of agriculture is found in Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia.

5 of 70

What technology do you need?

  • People
  • Reaper
  • Tractors, etc.
  • They use the technology that is available to them

6 of 70

level of Development are you associated with & why?

Developing because it is used in developing countries.

7 of 70

What are the biggest risks or challenges you face?

They must import workers, and find housing and social services for all of the workers.

This can be bad think about U.S. slavery

MIXED CROP AND LIVESTOCK

By: Camilla, Nathan, Simon, and Tim

10 of 70

What does it grow and raise

Crops and livestock

Raise domesticated animals; term used to those referred to, raised for food.

It grows a lot of corn and feed the corn to the animals and the animals provides manure for the crops

11 of 70

Climate

HUMID, semi- arid, moist-ish, musty, crusty, chunky, warm, slushy,

=

12 of 70

Technology

Raising livestock doesn't require a lot of technology, possibly a truck, some trailers and cow milking things.

Harvesting mixed crop doesn't necessarily require technology, but to harvest efficiently a farmer would need a tractor, and reaper.

13 of 70

Economy & Level of Development

They devote most of the land to the crops, but get most of their money from animal products

This type of agriculture, is usually associated with MDCs because of the use of advanced technology, and they sell most of their products instead of farming for themselves. However, it is also found in LDCs

14 of 70

Risks and Challenges

Cows can be really expensive, and growing mixed crop does not provide a lot of profit but animal products do. The equipment required can also be dangerous to handle.

15 of 70

Other

Cows make manure to grow the corn for the cows and growing mixed crop does not provide a lot of cas

Pastoral Nomadism

18 of 70

What do Pastoral Nomads Raise?

  • Herd domestic animals, usually sheep, goats and camels

19 of 70

What type of climate do pastoral nomads need?

Pastoral nomadism is typically in dry climates around central asia, and parts of africa, as shown below. Different animal are adapted to different climates.

20 of 70

Technology in Pastoral Nomadism

Pastoral Nomadism uses very little or no technology when herding animals, with tents and harnesses being some of the most advanced technology they have.

21 of 70

Pastoral nomadism Level of development

Pastoral Nomadism has very low development, although they are slightly higher than that of hunters and gatherers, because of animal herding.

22 of 70

Challenges and Problems

  • Livestock are affected by diseases and may be killed by wild animals.
  • Because there is low rainfall, the pastoralists are faced with water shortages for their cattle and the pasture become parched and brown and the condition of the livestock deteriorates.

Intensive Subsistence, Wet Rice Dominant

By: Niko Ventura, Emily Elder, Shelby Andrewsen, Tanner Van Orden

25 of 70

Wet rice

Farmer prepare fields by oxen and plow, and then flood it.The water is then collected by rainfall, river overflow, and irrigation. Best way to grow rice, is to plant in dry land and then move it to a flooded field.

26 of 70

Benefits and drawbacks

A problem with rice farming is the ratio of famers to arable land because it is so high in most of asia that most families must produce enough food for themselves from a small area of land.

27 of 70

Technology

Rice grows best in very wet climates. Most rice plants are grown in a nursery and then transplanted to a field. To farm rice you need to have a way to plow a field. You also need to have water for the field. Rice is mostly grown in developing countries. Rice is grown in much of Southeast Asia. It can be a challenge to feed your family from such a small piece of land.

sorghum - ( sore gum, it’ll make your gums sore)

soybeans

wheat

barley

millet

oats

30 of 70

What Type of Climate and Land Is Required

Used where the precipitation is too low and the winter is too harsh for rice to grow

31 of 70

What Technology Do We Need?

Most of the work done is via human labor as machinery can not be afforded

Slaves are good!!

32 of 70

What type of economy or level of Development are you associated with and why?

This is used in less developed countries, with not a good economy. It is associated with this because it is in China and India, which are less developed.

33 of 70

What are the biggest challenges or risks that you face?

  • Challenges are that irrigation systems have been created for large communal farms rather than secluded smaller ones.
  • They can not afford to operate and maintain the machinery

34 of 70

Technology

Raising livestock doesn't require a lot of technology, possibly a truck, some trailers and cow milking things.

Harvesting mixed crop doesn't necessarily require technology, but to harvest efficiently a farmer would need a tractor, and reaper.

Dairying

Isaac, Chloe, Abbi

40 of 70

What do they produce?

Dairy:

  • Yogurt
  • Cheese
  • Butter
  • Milks

41 of 70

Climate Needed

  • Dry Climate with low humidity is the best.
  • Dairyers need climates that allow cows to stay cool and pastures to grows.

42 of 70

Technology and Type of Country

  • They use machines but always have humans there making sure things are all right. Dairying is in both types of development. The more developed it is, the bigger demand for milk making it more expense.

43 of 70

It’s a Risky Business...

  • Labor Intensive:
      • Cows must be milked twice a day, everyday; although the actual milking can be done by machines, dairy farming nevertheless requires constant attentions throughout the year.
  • Winter Feed:
      • Dairy farmers face the expense of feeding the cows in the winter,, when they may be unable to graze on grass in winter. Farmers usually use hay or grain to feed them.

44 of 70

Grains

By: Mark Argyle, Arda Caliskan, Grant Daniels

45 of 70

What do they grow?

In this type of farming, they grow cereal grains for human consumption. This includes wheat, barley, oats etc.

46 of 70

What Type of Land and Climate is Required?

It needs a cool, dry and clear climate. The land needs to be well drained and fertilized.

47 of 70

What technology is required?

Grain farming is usually a commercial type of farming. This means in order to be successful, a lot of technology and machines are required.

48 of 70

What Level of Development is Optimal?

Grains need to be grown in developed countries, because you need large machines to be able to harvest and plant enough to be efficient.

49 of 70

Problem of growing grain

  1. The weather is less predictable so their is a risk that you will get little to no product.
  2. It requires a lot of technology to make it fast enough to be useful.
  3. There are a lot of people growing grains so they can undershoot you on the market.

Crucial Information

Why are pictures of wheat fields always bad?

-Because they’re too grainy!

Mediterranean

Chapter 10 Key Issue 3

Mary Payne, Zack Palmer, Jonathan Kwong, Henry Windsor

53 of 70

What do you grow/raise?

Fruits and veggies, specifically olives and grapes. They also grow cereal grains.

54 of 70

What type of Land is required?

Land with:

  • Rainfall
  • Mild temperatures
  • Irregular topography
  • is near to large bodies of water

55 of 70

What Technology is Needed

  • Efficient Irrigation and conveyance systems are needed for mediterranean agriculture.
  • More irrigation water is needed for different types of crops and climates, requiring quicker ways to irrigate in shorter amounts of time.

56 of 70

What type of economy or level of Development are you associated with and why?

It is associated with more developed countries because of the level of technology involved in the process.

57 of 70

What are the biggest risks or challenges you face?

Some crops may be temperamental and hard to grow, and may not be in season all year round, giving farmers the need to adjust crops between seasons.

58 of 70

Commercial Gardening

59 of 70

Shifting Cultivation

HaeIn Jeon, Rachel Gledhill, Taylor O’Brien

60 of 70

What do you grow or Raise?

The main crops that are grown are rice (grown in Southeast Asia), Corn and manioc/cassava (grown in South America), and sorghum (grown in Africa). In some regions they grow yams, sugarcane, plantain, and vegetables.

61 of 70

What type of land and climate is required?

It is usually performed in a fairly warm climate, with good amount of water. It also needs to be in an area where there is a sizable amount of land.

62 of 70

What technology do you need?

Simple gardening tools are needed for shifting cultivation such as tools like hoes, a shovel, and a spade. There also needs to be a method to start a fire to follow the method of slashing and burning that is commonly used to clear the fields to reuse them as much as possible.

63 of 70

What type of economy or level of development are you associated with and why?

It is associated with a poorer economy and a relatively low level of development because it is practiced mostly on a family basis in developing countries, it is not a mainstream type of agriculture, and MDCs advocate for the voiding of this practice.

64 of 70

What are the biggest risks or challenges you face?

The land is deteriorating

Large scale deforestation, soil and nutrient loss

Reduction of cycle caused the land to not be able to return to natural condition.

Fallow cycle used to be 20-30 years, was reduced to 2-3 years^^

The amount of Earth’s surface allocated to tropical rain forests has already been reduced to half of its original area. Practiced in tropical areas..

65 of 70

Extra Fact!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Shifting cultivation was still being practiced as a viable and stable form of agriculture in many parts of Europe and east into Siberia at the end of the 19th century and in some places well into the 20th century.

Elizabeth Moulton

67 of 70

What Is Grown and Raised

They grow fruits and vegetables, ranging from apples, tomatoes asparagus, cherries, lettuce, etc. Depending and demand on what is wanted.

68 of 70

Climate and Land Required

Mainly in the southeastern U.S., it includes a long growing season and humid climate. Accessible to Philadelphia, Washington, and New York. Pretty much arable land or whatever can support the crop at hand.

69 of 70

Type of Economy/Level of Dev. Associated/Technology Needed

Commercial gardening is in more developed countries with a good economy. This is because they use machines at every stage of the growing process.

70 of 70

Risks and Challenges

Risks can include floods, famines, not enough land, droughts, no seeds and as such are the challenges. Equipment breaks is one for if they use machines.
