Whittier Elementary

2 of 12

Whittier SIP Introduction

Whittier's School Improvement Plan (SIP) is designed to promote areas of strength in our schoolwide data and identify areas for improvement in adult and student practices. Our primary goal in the construction and implementation of the SIP is to highlight the core instructional practices, academically and social emotionally, which we believe will result in a positive learning environment for ALL students. As a team, we want every student to have a sense of belonging, feel nurtured, and achieve academic success at the highest level. The team was intentionally about measuring students' success at every tier, both academically and socially emotionally.

Theory of Change - Engagement Universal Strategy

Whittier’s Goal: “We will increase favorable responses from 58% In Spring of 2022 to 63% in Spring of 2023. If students are engaged in their learning, then they will have a stronger sense of belonging in our school community. “

[If we…]

Use Whittier’s Strategic Seven framework as a lens for engaging our learners.

(All 7 apply, but we will focus on relationships and routines, small group instruction, and consolidation of learning for the subsequent theory of change. )

[Then we]

will have common instructional practices and language to engage students in the learning and teaching process.

[Looks like]

-Weekly Collaborative planning with reflection

- Using the S7, focus on engagement in our COIs (relationships and routines, small group instruction, consolidation of learning) -GS changed this, but we didn’t talk about it.

- Teaching students what engagement looks/ sounds like in a classroom

[Resulting in]

63% of students scoring favorably on the engagement section of the Panorama survey

[Leads to]

-Stronger peer/peer and peer/ teacher relationships

- Stronger student discourse

- More focused on-task participation during chew time

[Looks like]

Wildcat Prides, Check-in-check out, SAIG groups, family nights, PBIS store, clubs and school events

[Resulting in]

Increase from 67% to 72% sense of student belonging

[Leads to]

Fewer BIRs, student application of the 3 B’s, improvement in panorama survey results

Theory of Change - ELA Universal Strategy

[If we…]

Use Whittier’s Strategic Seven framework as a lens for engaging our learners to increase reading achievement.

[Then we]

Grade student written responses and provide effective feedback on students written response to literature.

Implement R.A.C.E. written response strategy across all grade levels.

Share exemplars of grade level and above grade level responses.

[Looks like]

The feedback will be goal referenced, actionable, user-friendly, timely, ongoing, and consistent. Feedback will be teacher to student and student to student..

[Resulting in]

We will increase the percentage of students who are proficient in reading on IAR from 34% in SY22 to 40% in SY23

[Leads to]

Students will be more reflective and critical of written responses and modify their work accordingly.
