Dear Parents and Guardians:
November is here- it seems like we just had the first day of school! Time flies when you are having fun! Spending time each school day with your children certainly makes the days go by quickly. Your children are amazing. They are growing by leaps and bounds each day. Thank you for sharing your children with us and trusting that we will be providing a top notch education for their academic and social and emotional success.
Please get involved in our SAC and PTO organizations. These are great ways to learn about what is happening at PSE as well as connect with other families. Your voice and ideas are important, and together we can make great things happen for the students at PSE!

Our students have been sharing ideas about how to be successful and creating their individual successful students! As a school, we are developing goals that will focus on building a culture that brings awareness to college, career, and service opportunities. We will also focus on organization, learning through writing, and goal setting. We have a lot happening at PSE!

What is a School Advisory Council?
The School Advisory Council (SAC) is a team of people representing various segments of the community–parents, teachers, students, administrators, support staff, business/ industry people and other interested community members. The purpose of a SAC is to assist in the preparation and evaluation (developing and evaluating) of the results of the school improvement plan and to assist the principal with the annual school budget.

PSE’s kindergarteners explore how rules help keep people safe and make things fair for all in our community. In Benchmark Unit 3 reading unit, students make connections to help understand why rules are important and what role rules play in our society. Over the course of the next few weeks, our students will read poems, stories and nonfiction informational texts on rules and how they help people. Be sure to ask your kindergartener what they are learning about rules.
In math, our students are working on addition and subtraction and word problems. Now is a good time to work on helping your child count to 100 by ones and by tens.
Your child brings home a reading bag of books each night. Please listen while your kindergartener reads the books and practices the sight words which are in the bag. One good way to help your child become a strong reader is to discuss books and ask questions about the characters and events in the story.
Kindergarten:
First Grade:
We cannot believe the first Quarter of school is already behind us! We are having a blast in First Grade!
We are completely immersed in our new Reading Curriculum and our students are working so hard to increase their reading/writing skills. Make sure you are checking their backpacks for any books coming home. It is so important for students to practice reading at home!
In math, we are continuing work with addition and subtraction. We encourage you to talk with your child about numbers and maybe even quiz them on their addition/subtraction facts! We will be taking our next Iready diagnostic test in December.
In science and social studies we are learning about living things and being a part of a community. We recently had the Environmental Studies Center visit our classrooms. Be sure to ask your student how the visit went! They learned so much about manatees and our local environment.
We are so excited to see what the Second Quarter will bring!
Kinder Primer Grado:
No podemos creer que ya pasaron las primeras nueve semanas. Nos estamos divirtiendo en primer grado.
Estamos sumergidos en nuestro nuevo currículo de lectura y nuestros estudiantes están trabajando arduamente para aumentar sus destrezas de lectura y escritura. Asegúrese de ver sus mochilas para ver los libros que traen a casa. Es importante que lean diariamente en casa!
En matemáticas, continuamos con sumas y restas. Hable con ellos sobre los números y por qué no hacer preguntas d sumas y restas. En diciembre tomaremos nuestro próximo diagnostico de matematicas.,
En ciencia y estudios sociales, aprendemos sobre cosas que viven y ser parte de una comunidad. Recientemente tuvimos la visita de el Centro de Estudios Ambientales. Preguntes como les fue! Ellos aprendieron sobre los manatí y ambiente local.
Estamos felices de ver que nos preparan las próximas nueve semanas.
En kinder exploramos cómo las reglas ayudan a mantener a las personas a salvo y justas para todos en nuestra comunidad. En Benchmark, unidad 3 los estudiantes hacen conexión de cómo las reglas ayudan y que rol toman estas reglas en nuestra sociedad. Proximamente leeran poemas, historias, y texto informativo que es real y cómo le ayuda a las personas. Pregúnteles qué aprenden.
En matemáticas, vemos sumas, restas,y problemas escritos. Ahora es buen tiempo para ayudarles a que cuenten hasta al 100 o de diez en diez. También llevan libros para leer diariamente así como palabras comunes. Escuchelos leer y hágales preguntas para asegurarse que entienden.
Second Grade:
Second grade students are starting a new reading unit titled, “Many Characters, Many Points of View.” We will be learning how a story can change depending on who tells the story. Please continue reading daily with your child and discussing how every story is narrated from a unique point of view. Practice those high-frequency words (sight words) daily and read, read, READ!
Math is filled with arrays, adding and subtracting numbers up to 1000, determining odd/even numbers, and skip counting. Counting by 5’s is a fun activity that you can do with your child in the car!
Social Studies is focused on American Indians and their impact on North America. In Science, your child will become a GEOLOGIST as we begin to study Earth’s rocks and soil.

Third Grade Team
3rd Grade is Growing Strong
WOW...Quarter 1 is already over! 3rd graders have been working hard with their Benchmark reading. We have completed two units and are now currently working on “Government for the People”. We are learning about how to be responsible citizens. If you’re curious about Benchmark, ask your student to show you what they have been working on. Please make sure your 3rd grader is reading 20-30 minutes each night.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50...ask your student about their math facts! 3rd graders are learning to multiply and divide by using strategies such as equal groups, arrays, number line, repeated addition, and repeated subtraction. Students should be practicing their multiplication flashcards each night. They spent a lot of time cutting them out and writing the product on the back. Have some fun and quiz your student :)
In Social Studies we were busy learning about Hispanic Heritage Month and why it’s September 15 - October 15. We were also learning about our U.S. Government, which will help us better understand our Benchmark reading. Our 3rd grade goal now is to learn the five regions of the United States. We’ll have fun exploring landmarks and resources during our geography unit.
Science was all about plants and what they need to survive. Now it’s time to see what animals need to survive. We will be able to apply our background knowledge about animals that we learned from our Benchmark reading. Ask your student about camouflage and why it’s so important for animals.
Segundo Grado Tercer Grado
WOW...ya terminaron las primeras nueve semanas! Los estudiantes de 3er grado han estado trabajando arduamente con lectura en Benchmark. Completamos dos unidades y estamos estudiando sobre “Gobierno para las Personas.” Aprendemos sobre cómo ser ciudadanos responsables. Si quiere saber sobre Benchmark, pregúntele a su hijo en que están trabajando. Asegúrese que su hijo esté leyendo 20-30 minutos diariamente.
10, 20, 30, 40, 50...pregúntele sobre las matemáticas! Los de 3ro aprenden a multiplicar y dividir utilizando estrategias como grupos iguales, 3rd graders are learning to multiply and divide by using strategies such as equal groups, matrices, recta numérica, suma repetida y resta repetida. Diariamente deben practicar con las tarjetas de las tablas. Ellos pasaron bastante tiempo escribiendo el resultado y cortando estas tarjetas. Diviertanse y pregúntele a sus hijos :)
En Estudios Sociales aprendimos sobre el mes de la Herencia Hispana y por qué celebramos del 15 de septiembre al 15 de octubre. Aprendemos sobre el Gobierno de EE.UU. , lo cual ayudará a entender la lectura en Benchmark. Nuestra meta ahora es aprendernos las cinco regiones de los Estados Unidos lo cual haremos explorando lugares y recursos durante la unidad de geografía.
En ciencia vimos plantas y que necesitan para sobrevivir. Ahora vemos a los animales así que utilizamos lo que sabemos y aprendimos en la lectura de Benchmark. Pregunte sobre camuflageado y por qué es importante.
Los estudiantes de segundo grado empezaron una nueva unidad titulada, “Muchos Personajes, Varios puntos de Vista.” Veremos cómo puede cambiar la historia dependiendo de quien la cuenta. Por favor continuen leyendo diariamente con su hijo y continué hablando sobre los puntos de vista de cómo se narran las historias. Practicaremos las palabras frecuentes diariamente y leeremos, leeremos LEEREMOS!
Las matemáticas están llenas de formaciones, sumas, restas, hasta 1000, determinar nones/pares, y conteo saltado. Contar de 5 en 5 es una actividad divertida que puedes hacer en el carro.
Estudios Sociales se enfoca en los Indios Nativos y su impacto a América del Norte. En ciencia, su hijo será un geólogo en nuestro estudio del mundo, rocas, y tierra.

Our 4th graders have had an awesome October and November! They have already learned so much as we wrap up Quarter 1 and head into Quarter 2!
Our readers have started learning how to analyze nonfiction. They have been working on how to research certain topics and cite these sources in their writing. They have learned how to identify the central idea and details of a nonfiction text. They have also learned how to take notes for their research using the structure of the text. Our authors have been learning how to write expository essays, using text evidence to respond to a stimulus.
Our mathematicians are finishing up mastering the concept of multiplication. They know how to multiply larger numbers using arrays, area models, the Distributive Property, the partial product strategy and the algorithm. Students are also learning how to work through multistep word problems, breaking them down step-by-step, in order to understand what the question is asking them to do, solve it properly and be able to explain their reasoning in complete sentences. Whew! It’s a lot of work, but we know they can do it!
Our 4th grade scientists are having a fantastic time learning about Plants and Animals. They have even learned how they affect the environment! Ask your child what science investigations they have conducted in class. Have them explain what they have observed and summarize what they have learned.
Of course, our readers should be reading every night, completing their response homework and tracking their reading in their reading journals. Please remember to check your child’s planner!
Fourth Grade
Our 5th graders have had a wonderful first nine weeks of school! They are learning lots as we finish Quarter 1 and head into Quarter 2.
Our readers are learning how to analyze nonfiction texts, differentiate between primary and secondary sources, and remember the amendments to our Constitution. They are learning to identify central idea and relevant details in fiction and nonfiction. As writers, they are learning to write opinion and expository essays.
Our mathematicians have learned about order of operations, expressions, multiplication and division, and are now beginning to learn about fractions. As always, you can help at home by encouraging your student to practice on iReady, practice their math facts for fluency, and work in any programs their teacher is using in the classroom to give extra practice.
Our scientists have learned about the process of science, the human body, plant and animal structure, and are now learning about our amazing solar system. We are asking questions and attempting to answer these questions with things we can find in nature and the world around us.
At home, your students should be reading every night, as we know the FSA will be coming in the spring and our reading needs to be strong. Students can practice their math with iReady and any programs their teachers use in class. Best of luck in the new quarter, Fifth Graders! We are so proud of you and we think you are doing an amazing job.
Nuestros estudiantes han aprendido tanto en las primeras nueve semanas y van en camino a más aprendizaje en las próximas nueve semanas.
En lectura aprendemos a analizar textos de no ficción, diferenciar entre fuente primaria y secundaria, y recordar las enmiendas a nuestra constitución. Ven cómo encontrar la idea principal e ideas relevantes en ficción y no ficción. Como escritores, aprenden a escribir opiniones y composiciones de exposición.
Nuestros matemáticos, han aprendido sobre orden de operaciones, expresiones, multiplicacion y division, y ahora empiezan a aprender sobre fracciones. Como siempre puede ayudar en casa animando a practicar en iReady, practicar las matemáticas para fluidez, y trabajar en programas que sus maestros utilicen en el salon para ayudarles con práctica extra.
En ciencia aprenden sobre el proceso de ciencia, el cuerpo humano, estructura de plantas y animales, y ahora ven el sistema solar. Hacemos preguntas e intentamos contestar preguntas con respuestas que encontramos en la naturaleza y alrededor del mundo..
En casa, los estudiantes deben leer diariamente, ya que sabemos que los exámenes estatales serán en la primavera y la lectura debe ser fuerte, practiquen matemáticas en iReady o programas utilizados en clase. La mejor de la suerte en este segundo cuarto estudiantes de 5to grado! Estamos orgullosos de ustedes y del trabajo que desempeñan..
Cuarto Grado
Nuestros estudiantes han aprendido tanto en las primeras nueve semanas y van en camino a más aprendizaje en las próximas nueve semanas.
En lectura aprenden cómo analizar no ficción. Aprenden cómo buscar información de ciertos temas e incluirlos con el crédito debido en su escritura. También saben cómo identificar la idea principal y detalles de un texto real, cómo tomar notas de su búsqueda usando la estructura del texto. Ellos también han aprendido cómo buscar evidencia en su texto para evidencia en su composición expuesta.
En matemáticas ven el concepto de multiplicación, Propiedades Distribuidas, la estrategia del producto parcial y algoritmo. Los estudiantes aprenden sobre problemas escritos de varios pasos, poder ver paso a paso que nos piden, poder resolverlo y llegar a la respuesta final. Es bastante trabajo pero podemos hacerlo!
Nuestros estudiantes en ciencia aprenden sobre Plantas y Animales. Han aprendido cómo afectan el medio ambiente! Pregúnteles qué investigaciones se han hecho en clase. Que le expliquen qué han observado y en resumen que han aprendido.
Por Supuesto nuestros lectores deben leer diariamente, responder a preguntas de su tarea y mantener un diario donde tiene record de lo que lee. Por favor no se olvide de ver el planificador de su estudiante!

PSE Green School Initiative
PSE is taking part in the Students 4H20 Plastic Bag Recycling Contest by collecting clean, dry plastic store bags. Help our environment by recycling with us!
Our goal is to recycle 4,000 bags.
