Why include an Escape Room in your next unit?

Students can't just passively read about a topic; they must apply concepts and skills to unlock clues and progress through the game.

Example Unit

Foster Active Learning

A digital escape room is an effective learning tool for any subject because it transforms learning into an interactive game. Instead of simply receiving information, students are actively engaged in using what they've learned to solve problems.

Critical thinking & Problem Solving

Gamified nature boosts engagement

The storyline and clear goal of "escaping" create a sense of purpose and urgency. The immediate feedback from a correct answer provides a positive reinforcement loop that keeps students focused and eager to succeed.

Puzzles are often designed with distractors or red herrings, forcing students to analyse information, make connections, and develop logical strategies.

Create a Digital Escape Room 🕵️‍♀️

Design your own "digital escape room" using Google Slides.

On each slide, present a puzzle or problem related to your chosen topic. Solving a problem reveals a clue (e.g., a number or a word) that helps students to "escape" to the next slide or ultimately "unlock" the final slide.

Either create a new slide deck in your Drive, or make a copy of the template provided.

Using Gemini for the Heavy Lifting

Example Gemini prompt: Act as an experienced teacher of [describe your context eg year level, subject, location]. Please create a slide outline for a digital escape room based on [topic eg Pythagorean theorem] using Google Slides. Suggest 5 puzzles, each with 4 possible answers. Include an answer key.

Gemini can help write the content for each puzzle. For example, Gemini can generate:

  • A scenario that connects to the theme.
  • The specific questions or tasks students need to complete.
  • Multiple-choice options, including plausible distractors.
  • Hints or "teacher notes" with the correct answer and a breakdown of the solution.

Include your context: Gemini is able to adjust the language and spelling to be appropriate for a New Zealand classroom, ensuring the content is familiar and accessible to students. This includes using New Zealand English spelling conventions, providing contextually relevant examples, and pitching content at an appropriate level.

Gemini can streamline the creation process, providing a solid foundation and creative content that a teacher can then adapt and refine.
