KEY STAGE ONE SATS2022

PLEASE REMEMBER…….

  • There has been a huge impact on Y2 children nationally, as a result of COVID.
  • The first few years of their time in education has been negatively impacted, as a result of remote learning, lockdowns, bubble closures and pupil absences.

Try not to worry- They have the rest of their school education to ‘catch up’.

WHY WE HAVE KEY STAGE ONE SATS

  • SATs stands for Statutory Assessment Tests. This historic name can be misleading and suggests that 6-7 year olds are formally tested.
  • The assessments enable you to know how your child is doing.
  • Detailed teacher assessments over time show what your child has achieved, their strengths and next steps.
  • It is a statutory requirement to assess children and to inform parents, the local authority and the Department for Education about the end of Key Stage attainment for each child
  • The assessments are used to judge schools and compare how schools are performing.

WHAT IS ASSESSED AND REPORTED TO YOU

  • We assess Reading, Writing, Maths and Science outcomes

You will be told if your child is:

  • Emerging - children who are not yet working consistently at an expected level in all areas. However they may often be working within an expected level, but not yet consistently / independently

  • Expected - children who are working at the level expected for their age consistently

  • Exceeding - children who are consistently working at a level above that expected for their age

HOW WILL WE ASSESS YOUR CHILDREN

  • Teacher assessments over time are the main way we make a judgement about the level your child is working at.
  • We use frequent APP (Assessing Pupil Progress) assessments and other in school evidence to understand your child’s specific learning needs on a day by day basis. This ongoing assessment is the most important tool for our staff when making their end of Key Stage One judgements.
  • Formal ‘testing’ of all children ended in 2009 but schools have the option to use national test materials to support teacher assessments.
  • We will use test papers, but these will not all be used at once with all children. Instead, these are delivered to smaller groups spread over time this half term.
  • Children will not be deliberately aware of Year 2 SATs. They will be incorporated into the normal routine (guided and group reading, spelling quiz and maths challenges).
  • Staff use test materials sensitively and appropriately. In our experience, many children love doing the ‘quizzes’ and often ask to do more!

IMPACT OF SATS ASSESSMENTS FOR YOUR CHILD

  • Assessment materials are delivered over a two to three week period. These are designed to help support with the gathering of information as part of their usual teaching timetable. Since last year, we have delivered similar test materials to children across school on a termly basis to support internal assessment. Our children should, therefore, be comfortable with the format and layout of the papers.
  • Your children will work in smaller groups when completing tests materials. Your children are familiar with how the questions will be presented to them.
  • These ‘tests’ are only a small part of how the information is gathered about the level that your child is working at.

WHAT WILL THE RESULTS MEAN

  • Firstly the results SHOULD not be used to gauge if your child has ‘passed or failed’ but to determine their strengths and areas for improvements.

ESPECIALLY POST COVID!

  • One test on one day for a 6 or 7 year old is NOT an accurate measure of your child’s learning. This is why the more formal SATs tests were scrapped in 2009.
  • Month of birth can impact where your child is at the end of Year 2
  • How well your child is making progress from their own starting point is significantly more important that their level of attainment. Children are all different and there is a lot more that is important about childhood and also learning, than a narrow Y2 end of year assessment judgement.

WHAT RESULT WILL YOU GET FOR YOUR CHILD AND WHAT DOES THAT MEAN

  • We will give you a ‘teacher assessment’ for your child. This will be based on their overall level of independent learning.

  • In Reading, Writing and Maths, you will be told if your child is:
  • Working Towards the Expected Standard (Emerging)
  • Working at the Expected Standard (Expected)
  • Working at Greater Depth within the Expected Standard
  • Science is reported as Emerging or Expected.

HOW YOU CAN HELP

  • Please do not talk about SATs and tests in front of children as they will be more likely to take it in their stride if it is part of their normal day

  • Please do not ‘test’ your children and especially not using the only sample and practice paper

  • Normal reading, spelling and homework help would be useful. The work set on TTRS, Doodle Maths, Rocket Phonics and Spelling Shed has been deliberately chosen by school staff to match the needs of your child.
