RESPIRATORY TRACT INFECTION MOLECULAR TESTING

Information Fact Sheet for Patients

Respiratory Tract Infection (RTI) Testing Fact Sheet

    • Acute respiratory tract infections caused by viruses are the most common human disease. Infections may affect both upper and lower respiratory tracts.
  • About 80% of respiratory infections are caused by viruses, with mixed infections (bacteria) accounting for about 20%.
  • Respiratory infections can occur within 1-5 days after exposure, often exhibiting common-cold like symptoms, and can worsen.
  • Molecular testing for pathogens via Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).
