Why use this strategy?

The WODB strategy:

  • Can be adapted to fit the needs of different learns and units of study
  • Allows all students to participate
  • More than one answer can be correct
  • Encourages math discourse and comparison of ideas
  • Requires students to justify their responses.

How this strategy works:

  1. Teacher provides students with four related choices.
  2. Students have to decide which of the four choices does not belong.
  3. Students share their selection
    1. Example: they could hold up a small square from their desk indicating the color
  4. Students are asked to justify their response.

Adaptations:

  • Students can move to different spots in the room in order to signal their selection.
  • With virtual learners:
    • create a Google Slides Template in which the students move their name or initials into a box to indicate their choice
    • Create a Padlet and have student type their name under the column indicating their choice
    • Have each students get an object from their home to represent their response:
      • Example: red: spoon, yellow: toy, green: book, blue: pencil
