GOAL 1: Research and Records

Choice A:

“FS: Tips for Maximizing …”

- Read through the entire article ahead of time to become familiar with the strategies the author used for breaking through a research brick wall.

- In Overview of Chilean Research emphasize the better records kept after about 1887, and that basic research involves a mix of civil and Catholic church records.

- In Looking Forward … summarize the first two paragraphs. They state the problem (dead-end in research back in time) and the solution (finding clues in more recent records).

- Scroll through the rest of the section to mention the records that were examined and the clues that were found.

- In Important Takeaways summarize the opening paragraph for tips, and then review the bullet points for additional factors.

“Guia Genealogica site”

- Scroll down through the page to show links for a wide variety of archives and libraries in Chile. (You may want to translate the page to English.)

“FS: Record Finder”

- Browse the Record Finder and discuss the categories of records and which to use for different objectives.

“FS: Genealogy Word List”

- Mention the Table of Contents (upper left) with categories for words, numbers, dates, etc..

- Click the Key Words link and review a few of the entries; then scroll through the list.

- Scroll down to the General Word List section and recommend it for further study.

“FS: Chile Personal Names”

- Mention the Online Tools links. These refer to the BYU Script Tutorial, the Behind the Names site, etc.

- In Surname Customs and “de (of) …” review and discuss the bullet points.

- Also review Given Names and Name Endings.

GOAL 2: Civil Registration

Choice A:

“FS: Chile Civil Registration …”

- In Births briefly review the bullet points for types of information in birth records.

- In Marriages point out the second sentence, about the marriage record being recorded in the town where the bride live. Then summarize the second paragraph for types of information in marriage records.

- In Deaths summarize the second paragraph for types of information in the records.

“FS: Chile Census”

- In the Introduction read the second paragraph to set expectations with census records. Then summarize the bullet point and the paragraph below it for additional perspective.

- In Chile Census Records … mention the links to the Archivo Nacional Chile. Note: These links at one point were broken on the FamilySearch Wiki, so you can use this link instead: https://www.archivonacional.gob.cl/buscar/snpc?texto=Censo to search for census records by province.

- Scroll through the various church denominations in the rest of the article for additional info.
