Background and description

Background questions

  • How can we work across a public/private collaboration to contribute to science and education by building a digital platform that improved researchers’ access to data, improved data interoperability, and improve outcomes quality, reliability, and integrity?
  • How can we simplify the complex digital research ecosystem?
  • What types of digital research tools can help us along the way and how we can characterize them?
  • How can we contribute across disciplines, institutions, and open science systems?

Description

We set out to identify a specific area in the digital research landscape that facilitate the researcher’s journey of scientific discovery and achievement. Having defined a pathway, today we set out together along the first steps of this journey.

WG Objectives

  • Produce a categorisation schema of different types of research tools used in the management and sharing of research data based on:
    • Features
    • Functionalities
    • Interoperability
  • Map categorised research tools to the stages of a harmonised research data lifecycle
    • Crosswalks between harmonised cycle and others
  • Create a preliminary database framework to host information on research tools as an open access resource for the research data community

  • Recommend methodologies for the long-term sustainability and community curation of the database
  • Provide the research data community with essential knowledge to better understand, navigate and select appropriate tools to support research data management and sharing
  • Highlight key areas for the improvement of interoperability between research tools to enable more streamlined data sharing and reuse
  • Contribute to the wider ambitions of the Research Data Alliance and collaborate with other groups working on global open research commons
  • Address challenges associated with navigating the expansive and fast-changing landscape of digital research tools
