Research Question
How do social stigmas in healthcare impact the maternal health of African American women?
Thesis Statement
The social stigmas in healthcare negatively affect maternal health for African American women by increasing maternal mortality rates, increasing mental illness rates, and raising the risk of complications with their infants.
Key Findings
According to a 2019 CDC study, the mortality rate for Black women was 40.8% higher than that for white women.
The historical relationship between physicians and Black women is deeply complex, stretching back to the period of slavery in America.
Approximately, more than 700 women die in the U.S. each year as a result of pregnancy or the complications it develops.
Black mothers have faced significant challenges in communication with the clinicians throughout pregnancy, labor, and postpartum care.

In conclusion, the social stigmas within African American maternal healthcare are not just only barriers to access, they are barriers to life itself. By raising awareness and addressing this issue, we can ensure all women receive the care and respect they deserve.
