The Word of Wisdom is “a principle with promise.”
The Word of Wisdom is “a principle with promise.”
SCRIPTURE
1 A WORD OF WISDOM…
2 To be sent greeting; not by commandment or constraint, but by revelation and the word of wisdom, showing forth the order and will of God in the temporal salvation of all saints in the last days—
3 Given for a principle with promise, adapted to the capacity of the weak and the weakest of all saints, who are or can be called saints.
4 Behold, verily, thus saith the Lord unto you: In consequence of evils and designs which do and will exist in the hearts of conspiring men in the last days, I have warned you, and forewarn you, by giving unto you this word of wisdom by revelation…
- Doctrine and Covenants 89:1-4
The Word of Wisdom is “a principle with promise.”
Boyd K. Packer
Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
The Word of Wisdom was “given for a principle with promise”. That word principle in the revelation is a very important one. A principle is an enduring truth, a law, a rule you can adopt to guide you in making decisions. Generally principles are not spelled out in detail. That leaves you free to find your way with an enduring truth, a principle, as your anchor…Honor the principle of the Word of Wisdom and you will receive the promised blessings…
The Word of Wisdom does not promise you perfect health, but it teaches how to keep the body you were born with in the best condition and your mind alert to delicate spiritual promptings…While the Word of Wisdom requires strict obedience, in return it promises health, great treasures of knowledge, and that redemption bought for us by the Lamb of God, who was slain that we might be redeemed.
- Elder Boyd K. Packer, “The Word of Wisdom: The Principle and the Promises,”General Conference, April 1996

The Word of Wisdom helps me be healthy in body and spirit
SCRIPTURE
18 And all saints who remember to keep and do these sayings, walking in obedience to the commandments, shall receive health in their navel and marrow to their bones;
19 And shall find wisdom and great treasures of knowledge, even hidden treasures;
20 And shall run and not be weary, and shall walk and not faint.
21 And I, the Lord, give unto them a promise, that the destroying angel shall pass by them, as the children of Israel, and not slay them. Amen.

The Lord Gave Me a Temple(Children’s Songbook #153)
MUSIC
1. The Lord gave me a temple to live within on earth.
Once in Heaven I was spirit, but I left my home at birth.
I’ll make my temple brighter; I’ll keep my spirit free.
My body is the temple my Father gave to me.
2. If I keep my body clean and pure and habit-free,
I may in Father’s temple claim blessings promised me.
On resurrection morning, I’ll take my body bright
And in celestial glory forever live in light.

The First Presidency holds “the keys of the kingdom.”
The First Presidency holds “the keys of the kingdom.”
SCRIPTURE
2 Therefore, thou art blessed from henceforth that bear the keys of the kingdom given unto you; which kingdom is coming forth for the last time.
3 Verily I say unto you, the keys of this kingdom shall never be taken from you, while thou art in the world, neither in the world to come;
16 And this shall be your business and mission in all your lives, to preside in council, and set in order all the affairs of this church and kingdom.
- Doctrine and Covenants 90:2-3,16
The First Presidency holds “the keys of the kingdom.”
Russell M. Nelson
President of the Church
After centuries of apostasy, keys of the priesthood have again been restored. Under that authority, we have had hands laid upon our heads…
Surely a sacred moment of my life occurred April 12, 1984, when the First Presidency and members of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles laid their hands upon my head. As had been done for others before me, all the keys of the priesthood were conferred. As it is with each member of the Quorum of the Twelve, some keys are not used until called upon by the Lord, or as directed by his senior Apostle.
I feel the weight of responsibility and the burden of timeless trust. I know those keys have been restored “for the last days and for the last time.”
- Elder Russell M. Nelson, “Keys of the Priesthood,”General Conference, October 1987
If I Listen with My Heart(Music for Children)
MUSIC
1. If I had been a little child when Jesus lived on earth,
I would have liked to walk with Him and listen to His words,
But as I search the scriptures I can hear His words of peace
2. I hear a living prophet speak the things that Christ would say
If He were here upon the earth to talk with me today,
The prophet teaches how to live in righteousness and peace
3. I feel the Holy Spirit as he teaches truth and right,
He comforts me in times of need, He testifies of Christ,
He speaks to me in quiet ways that fill my soul with peace

Chorus:
And if I listen with my heart
I hear the Savior’s voice.
The First Presidency holds “the keys of the kingdom.”
God gives us prophets to guide and protect us
God gives us prophets to guide and protect us
SCRIPTURE
4 Nevertheless, through you shall the oracles be given to another, yea, even unto the church.
5 And all they who receive the oracles of God, let them beware how they hold them lest they are accounted as a light thing, and are brought under condemnation thereby, and stumble and fall when the storms descend, and the winds blow, and the rains descend, and beat upon their house.
12 And now, verily I say unto you, I give unto you a commandment that you continue in the ministry and presidency.
14 And from time to time, as shall be manifested by the Comforter, receive revelations to unfold the mysteries of the kingdom;
- Doctrine and Covenants 90:4-5,12,14
God gives us prophets to guide and protect us
Virginia U. Jensen
Former Member of the Relief Society General Presidency
Our prophets are men whom the Lord has raised up specifically to preside over the Church for the particular time in which they have served. The Lord is working through the leaders of His Church today, just as He has always done in the past.
…Do we fully appreciate what a wondrous blessing it is to each one of us that we have…our prophet? …If we listen to the voices of the world, we will be misled. But if we listen to the voice of the Lord through His living prophet and follow his counsel, we will never go astray.
…How blessed we are as Latter-day Saints to know that God can speak to us through our living prophet today and give us guidance and instruction and encouragement so that we may continue, just as the Lord’s true Church continues, steadfast and confident on the path that leads us back to Him.
- Sister Virginia U. Jensen, “‘Come, Listen to a Prophet’s Voice’,” General Conference, October 1998
I Will Be What I Believe(Music for Children)
MUSIC
1. Living in this world
with change all around
But with the prophets' words,
I'll stand on solid ground
Even though it's still hard,
with questions that arise
Every day, I will say
2. We'll spread the gospel wide
throughout all the earth
With Jesus as our guide
we'll wield the sword of truth
Even though it's still hard,
with questions that arise
Every day, I will say
We are as the army of Helaman
We have been taught in our youth
And we will be the Lord's missionaries to
bring the world his truth

Chorus:
I'll have faith like brother Joseph
and the strength of the pioneers
I'll be brave as a stripling warrior
and like Nephi persevere
I will spread God's love to all I know and serve
I will plead with my Father on my knees
I will be what I believe
God gives us prophets to guide and protect us
“All things shall work together for [my] good.”
“All things shall work together for [my] good.”
SCRIPTURE
24 Search diligently, pray always, and be believing, and all things shall work together for your good, if ye walk uprightly and remember the covenant wherewith ye have covenanted one with another.
- Doctrine and Covenants 90:24
“All things shall work together for [my] good.”
Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
I testify that when we embark upon or continue the incredible journey that leads to God, our lives will be better. This does not mean that our lives will be free from sorrow. We all know of faithful followers of Christ who suffer tragedy and injustice—Jesus Christ Himself suffered more than anyone. Just as God makes the “sun to rise on the evil and on the good,” He also allows adversity to test the just and the unjust. In fact, sometimes it seems that our lives are more difficult because we are trying to live our faith.
No, following the Savior will not remove all of your trials. However, it will remove the barriers between you and the help your Heavenly Father wants to give you. Those who heed the inner call and seek God, those who pray, believe, and walk the path the Savior has prepared—even if they stumble along the path at times—receive the consoling assurance that “all things shall work together for [their] good.”
- Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “A Yearning for Home,”General Conference, October 2017
I Will Follow God’s Plan(Children’s Songbook #164)
MUSIC
My life is a gift; my life has a plan.
My life has a purpose; in heav’n it began.
My choice was to come to this lovely home on earth
And seek for God’s light to direct me from birth.
I will follow God’s plan for me,
Holding fast to his word and his love.
I will work, and I will pray;
I will always walk in his way.
Then I will be happy on earth
And in my home above.

The Spirit can help me know what is true
The Spirit can help me know what is true
SCRIPTURE
1 Verily, thus saith the Lord unto you concerning the Apocrypha—There are many things contained therein that are true, and it is mostly translated correctly;
2 There are many things contained therein that are not true, which are interpolations by the hands of men.
4 Therefore, whoso readeth it, let him understand, for the Spirit manifesteth truth;
5 And whoso is enlightened by the Spirit shall obtain benefit therefrom;
- Doctrine and Covenants 91:1-2,4-5
The Spirit can help me know what is true
Mathias Held
Former Primary General President
[I]n addition to our rational minds, another dimension to gaining knowledge can give us guidance and understanding. It is the still and soft voice of His Holy Spirit speaking to our hearts and also to our minds.
I like to compare this principle with our visual capacity. Our Father in Heaven has given us not only one but two physical eyes. We can see adequately with only one eye, but the second eye provides us with another perspective. When both perspectives are put together in our brains, they produce a three-dimensional image of our surroundings…When these two perspectives are then combined in our souls, one complete picture shows the reality of things as they truly are. In fact, through the additional perspective of the Holy Ghost, certain “realities,” as pictured exclusively through our mental understanding, can be exposed as deceiving or plainly wrong. Remember the words of Moroni: “By the power of the Holy Ghost ye may know the truth of all things.
- Elder Mathias Held, “Seeking Knowledge by the Spirit,” General Conference, April 2019
Search, Ponder, and Pray(Children’s Songbook #109)
MUSIC
1. I love to read the holy scriptures,
And, ev’ry time I do,
I feel the Spirit start to grow within my heart-
A testimony that they’re true.
Words: Jaclyn Thomas Milne, b. 1949. © 1986 IRI
Music: Carol Baker Black, b. 1951. © 1986 IRI
2. So, prayerfully I’ll read the scriptures
Each day my whole life through.
I’ll come to understand.
I’ll heed the Lord’s command
And live as he would have me do.
Chorus:
Search, ponder, and pray
Are the things that I must do.
The Spirit will guide, and, deep inside,
I’ll know the scriptures are true.
