Autumn ‘22 - Winter ‘23: Great Decisions series
DCOWA Vice-President Sangita Gosalia, Senior Director, Global and Intercultural Affairs Center, University of Dayton, manages the numerous presenters who facilitate the Great Decisions series, hosted by the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute.
February ‘23: JCOWA Fun-Raiser at El Mesón
Past Board Director Thomas Martin, led a fun and challenging Latin American trivia night, while the participants enjoyed a 4-plate meal. We raised $500 for the Junior Council on World Affairs, our partner organization that works with local high school students.
March ‘23: Meet-and-Greet with Humphreys Fellows
DCOWA was honored to welcome two legal experts who visited Dayton through the Hubert Humphrey Fellowship/ Community College Residency Program:
Rudo Chasi from Zimbabwe who has used her expertise in handling wildlife crimes on behalf of the Zimbabwe Parks & Wildlife Management Authority, and Roza Aiylchieva from Kyrgyzstan, who has been working in economic development for agriculture.
March ‘23 JCOWA Quiz Bowl
Board members Katherine Rowell, Tom Martin, and Derek Petrey assisted with the JCOWA Quiz Bowl, held in the Kennedy Center at UD. DCOWA sponsors the winning team to go to the national Academic WorldQuest competition in Washington DC.
April ‘23: Virtual Voyages: Burkina Faso
Anthony Struthers-Young (UC, San Diego) presented his doctoral research based on fieldwork in southwest Burkina Faso, documenting both the languages and musical traditions of the Northern Toussian people.
May 23 - Annual Banquet
Our keynote speaker
Tom Thompson (veteran, USAF; BS Criminal Justice, Chapman Univ.; MPA, Wright State Univ.) is Chief of Police & Director of Public Safety at Sinclair Community College and the Executive Director of Valens Solutions.
Valens Solutions is a non-profit organization founded in 2020 which focuses on connecting immigrants to a variety of resources.
His presentation is on Listening to and Serving our Immigrant Population.
