Volcanoes

El Salvador has 23 active volcanoes. The San Miguel (locally known as the Chaparrastique) volcano is one of the most active ones. It has had 26 eruptions in the last 500 years.

Tourist Site

Joya de Cerén is El Salvador’s version of Pompeii. It is a farming community that was preserved under layers of volcanic ash. It was buried in ash around AD 600. It is an interesting site to see in El Salvador.

Brief History and Holidays in El Salvador

Conflict

  • On Sept. 15, 1821, El Salvador declares independence from Spain
  • In 1969, the “Football War” took place. Honduran landowners deported thousands of Salvadorans
    • This lead to the invasion of Honduras.
    • It was named due to the Fútbol game that took place between the two countries around the same time.

  • They use the US Dollar
  • El Salvador was inhabited by Paleo-Indian people as early as 10,000 years ago, and their paintings can still be seen in caves.
  • In 1983, Pope John Paul II visited El Salvador. More than 50% of El Salvadorans are Catholics.
  • The flag of El Salvador was officially made in 1910. The Blue stripes of the flag symbolize unity, and the white stripes symbolize peace.
