Intensive Intervention

Primer

Challenges Ahead

  • Approximately 10-15% of students ‘trigger’
  • Need to change trajectory early
  • New Interventions (Sonday, SRSD)
  • Turnover- loss of expertise

2

Areas to Intervene

Reading

  • Basic Reading
    • Phonics

  • Fluency

  • Comprehension

Math

  • Math Calculation

  • Math Reasoning

Writing

  • Written Expression

*Sentence Level

*Spelling

Don’t “count” but impact writing

5

  • Acquisition: slow with frequent errors
    • Goal: slow with few errors
  • Fluency: slow with infrequent errors
    • Goal: adequate rate and few errors
  • Generalization: fast/accurate
    • Goal: apply skill for other purposes

6

  • Correctly Targeted: Stage of Learning & Skill
  • Explicit Instruction- overt teaching of skill(s)
  • Systematic Instruction- sequential steps
  • Ample Practice- 95% accuracy before moving on
    • OTR’s- 30/70
  • Feedback- during instruction/acquisition
  • Monitoring= CBM for interventions

7

  • Is the intervention targeted to the correct skill?
  • Is the intervention is targeted to 1-2 skills?
  • Are the broad strategies evidence based?
  • Did the student receive the prescribed number of sessions, minutes, days?

8

Why have teachers deliver?

  • Fidelity matters- strong indicator of student improvement
  • Intervene and leverage skills during school day
  • Training investment- teacher longevity
  • Teachers know students best-Relationship

9

Why monitor with CBM?

CBM are:

  • Quick - 1 to 10 minutes
  • Efficient - easy to learn, administer, score
  • Reliable- can be confident in results
  • Valid- overall measures of reading, math, writing
  • Accurate - students get what they need

10

Oral Reading Fluency (ORF)

DOESN’T MEASURE FLUENCY- DROP THE “F”

  • General Measure of Reading (not fluency)
  • 50+ years of research
  • Precision- each grade has a range of approx 80 wpm
  • Growth- rate of improvement is evidence based
  • Goals - norm based
