Success Coach vs. Faculty Adviser

Academic Success Coach (That's us!)

Provide registration assistance and support navigating your degree evaluation, unofficial transcript and the schedule of classes
Help students explore majors and minors
Discuss academic options and explain university academic policies and procedures
Connect students to campus resources
Help you advocate with your instructors regarding academic options when life gets complicated

Faculty/Major Adviser

Advise students on core, major and elective classes to take each semester
Develop a graduation plan with students
Discuss interests, internships, graduate programs, and career options after graduation

Academic Success Coach (That's us!)

Provide registration assistance (e.g. troubleshooting holds, registration errors, adding yourself to a course waitlist)
Help students explore majors and minors
Discuss academic options (e.g., leave of absence, withdrawal, dropping classes, incomplete grades, double majoring or adding a minor) and explain university academic policies and procedures (e.g. how do students declare a major, what is academic probation?)
Provide personal support and advocate to faculty on students’ behalf when life gets complicated

Major Advisers in the Schools/College are experts on their curriculum - sequencing of classes, timing for graduation planning, also great resources for you to discuss careers, graduate school

Help you understand how to read your degree evaluation – how to create and save academic plans through the course planning tool like you did this summer; Add a course, drop a course, connecting you to other forms you may need to fill out or depts

Your Degree Evaluation lists all graduation requirements and shows what you’ve already completed. Meet with your faculty adviser to determine applicability of transfer major coursework.

Our University Core Curriculum is part of the 120 total credits you need to graduate. You’ll take Core classes along with your major classes and any elective course that you choose to meet the minimum credit requirement to graduate. Core classes give you an opportunity to explore your interests and passions, while taking care of requirements you need.

These are good things to keep in mind as you prepare to register this summer:

Our summer online advising tutorials and program is called New Student Registration, so be on the look-out for emails with more information about this. It will be important that you review the New Student Registration website and videos to make sure you’re taking any placement tests you may need, prior to when early registration opens.
Summer faculty advisers in your School or College will also be reaching out for advising support and guidance, and to review your degree evaluation.
Faculty/major advisers are typically assigned to students in the fall semester by their major department, and are the experts in advising students about what classes to take from semester to semester. It’s recommended to meet with your major/faculty adviser in your School/College at least once a semester; Undeclared Students who are figuring out their major are assigned a major faculty adviser in your School or College. It’s important to look-out for information from your School/College and major department regarding their advising practices.

Are you a commuter student? Do you need a safe place to store your belongings while on campus?
The Commuter Locker Program is designed to support undergraduate students who commute to campus by offering a secure place to store personal belongings during the academic year.
Lockers are located in a central campus location, University Center 3rd Floor, Parina Lounge, and are available on a semester-by-semester basis through a lottery application. APPLICATION OPENS JULY 28 – FIND APPLICATION IN YOUR USF EMAIL OR ON THE WEBSITE – DEADLINE TO APPLY AUGUST 19

Fall 2024 Course Modalities

In-person: Meets on-campus for every class session.
Hybrid: Mixture of on-campus and remote learning; see class schedule for details.
HyFlex: Meets on-campus for every class session with some students participating remotely via Zoom. Your professor will work with you to determine who attends in-person and who attends remotely.
Remote: Does not meet on-campus; instruction via Zoom during scheduled class time.
Online: Designed and taught completely online mostly through asynchronous learning.
