Background

  • FAIR data principles strongly contribute to facilitating knowledge discovery with regard to research data
    • By making it possible for humans and machines need to be able to discover, access, integrate, and analyze data
  • FAIR Principles, at a high level, are intended to apply to all research objects; both those used in research and those that are research outputs
  • However, the details depend on the type of research object
    • Software is not (just) data
  • We focus on the adaptation and adoption of the FAIR principles to research software

FAIR4RS Initiative

  • FAIR 4 Research Software Working group #FAIR4RS
  • Jointly convened as an RDA Working Group, FORCE11 Working Group, and Research Software Alliance (ReSA) Taskforce
    • Approved September 2020 (with some work started June 2020)
  • Coordinating a range of existing community-led discussions on
    • Defining and effectively applying FAIR principles to research software
    • Achieving adoption of these principles

Aims of FAIR4RS WG

FAIR4RS will deliver:

  • A document developed with community support defining FAIR principles for research software - 6 months (March 2021)
  • A document providing guidelines on how to apply the FAIR principles for research software (based on existing frameworks) - 12 months (Sept 2021)
  • A document summarising the definition of the FAIR principles for research software, implementation guidelines and adoption examples - 18 months (March 2022)
