BEFORE the proposal meeting

  • Assemble your committee (Appx G)

  • Familiarize yourself with the dissertation study options

  • Prepare the proposal document (4 chapters)

  • Set date (Appx H)

  • Distribute at least 2 weeks in advance

  • Prepare a 30-45 min. overview

3 thematically-linked studies of publishable quality

At least 2 should be data-focused: qual, quant, meta-analysis

PASS WITH MINOR REVISIONS

CONDITIONAL PASS

NO PASS

no changes to design or document are needed before going forward! Advisor completes Dissertation Proposal Defense Results form and notifies Linda and Kate

revisions to the document are relatively minor and most committee members are content to allow the advisor to supervise the revisions; advisor will sign and submit the DPDR form when revisions are approved

significant deficiencies in the proposal need to be addressed, and reviewed/approved by all committee members; you might be asked to re-defend the proposal

the student may be directed to substantially revise the proposal, or may be declined candidacy to the PhD degree; this should not happen with proper preparation!

What happens at your dissertation defense?

  • Public part: 45-50 minute presentation of your research to a general audience
    • Family and friends can attend
    • So can interested members of the university community, community partners
    • General questions can be asked

  • Private part: 1+ hour with your committee, in a private space
    • Outcomes consist of (a) pass with distinction, (b) pass, (c) pass with minor revisions, (d) pass conditional on major revisions, and (e) no pass.

  • Return to celebrate with family and friends

  • Degrees are conferred in May, October, February
