That we work 24 hours a day every day to provide the services needed.
Warning Coordination Meteorologist
NOAA/National Weather Service
I serve as the primary liaison between the National Weather Service and our partners in education, emergency management, media, and public. I also perform operational duties as a weather forecaster and issuer of weather warnings.
The people. It is great to be in an environment with people who share your science interests.
Rotating between shifts can be tough at times.
Working on the day of the Moapa flood, September 8, 2014. That flood devastated I-15 and kept it closed for 3 weeks.
Focus on the tools you will need when in the job you want. Beyond just the science, also focus on geography, communications, computers, writing. It never hurts to have a well-rounded education.
Communication. The best weather forecast or warning means nothing if you cannot effectively communicate it to those who need it.
I wish I had a primer on working for the Federal Government. That certainly puts a twist on the job.
I grew up fascinated by weather and the weather warnings coming across my TV screen. I didn’t know what it meant at the time, but I knew I wanted to work where they issue those warnings.
I have always loved meteorology and science in general. I began my college career pursuing a degree in chemistry. When an opportunity came up to pursue meteorology, I moved on and achieved my goal of a career in meteorology.
I hold a Bachelor of Science Degree in Atmospheric Sciences from Northern Illinois University
