Prosperity & The Temptation of the Heart
Deuteronomy 8:7-20
Context of Blessing: Prosperity and success themselves are not the criticism or warning of the text.
The Inner Danger: Abundance manifests a subtle temptation within our hearts as pride develops.
Forgetting God: Not a casual memory lapse, but a deliberate rejection.
What Does It Mean to "Forget the LORD"?
Deuteronomy 8:11-20
01
Disobedience & Idolatry
Neglecting God's wisdom, worship, and promises.
Leads to the temptation of idolatry because they demand less of you.
02
Forgetting Our Shared History
Losing touch with what God has done—both the hard lessons and good blessings.
Felt as a deliberate rejection of the relationship story, not a simple mental lapse.
The Antidote: Repetitive, Timely Worship
Scripture commands us to "Remember" through continuous practices—like the Lord's Supper —to actively combat the temptation to forget.
The Heart's Perspective: Gift vs. Self-Reliance
Deuteronomy 8:7-14, 17
Humility and Reliance on God
Verses 7–10
"The land He has given you"
Viewed as abundance provided by God. Gratitude and thanksgiving are the natural response.
The Illusion of Self-Reliance
Verses 12–14, 17
"My power and the might of my hand..."
Focuses on "you, you, you"—built houses, grown herds, accumulated wealth.
The Core Contrast: Gratitude vs. Pride
Pride manifests when accomplishments are viewed as self-made rather than received as gifts from God.
Two Manifestations of Relational Pride
Deuteronomy 17:11-13, 18-20
Rejection of Leadership
Ignoring community decisions because you believe your insight is superior to designated leaders, elders, and ministers.
The Trap: Elevating personal judgment above council.
Elitism in Leadership
Viewing oneself as superior or a "better Christian" when elevated to positions of authority.
The Trap: Forgetting that leadership is servanthood, not command.
The Danger of Self-Righteousness
Deuteronomy 9:1-5
Israel's Temptation: Viewing victory and success as proof of their own righteousness.
The Reality: It was solely because of Canaan’s wickedness and God’s promise.
God's Warning: Defeating a wicked enemy does not mean Israel is morally superior.
The Role of the Intercessor
Deuteronomy 9:6-29 & Titus 3:1-7
Physical Shadows
Equal Merit: Israel deserved to be "destroyed" just like Canaan.
The Difference: Moses interceded twice to stay God's judgment.
Spiritual Reality
Equal State: We were once separated, foolish, and disobedient.
The Difference: Jesus is our heavenly Intercessor and Savior.
The Application: Heartbreak & Compassion Over Anger & Disgust
We look at the world with compassion, not disgust—emboldened to share the Gospel because grace alone rescued us.
Self-Righteous Pride vs. Biblical Heartbreak
Comparing to the World — Luke 18:9-14
Measuring righteousness against others rather than God.
The Trap: Excusing personal failings with "at least I'm not like them" instead of recognizing the need for an intercessor.
Isolating from Sinners — Matthew 9:9-13
Refusing to engage with those deemed "beneath" us.
The Trap: Self-righteous isolation deprives others of Jesus, forgetting that we were once just like them.
Summary & Looking Ahead
The Two Paths of Pride
Manifestations: Pride creeps in subtly through Success or Comparison. Both require vigilant defense.
Grace Dismantles Pride
The Remedy: Constantly remember that everything we have and are comes solely by God's grace.
Humility: True humility begins when we recognize God as the source of all things.
To Ponder for Next Week: How would you classify modern-day idolatry, and what functional idols shape our hearts and lives?
