Event Description

  • Given a scenario, evidence, and suspects, students will perform a series of tests to solve the crime

Materials Provided

  • Iodine reagent
  • 1M HCl
  • Materials needed for chromatography test
  • Distilled water
  • Candle and matches may be given for burn tests
  • Different solutions for density testing may be given
  • Other special equipment may be given

Parts of the Event

  • Qualitative Analysis
    • solids, liquids, and/or non-powdered metals
    • 2 mixtures with 2 solids
  • Polymer Testing
    • hairs, fibers, and/or plastics
  • 1 paper chromatography test
  • 1-2 sets of crime scene physical evidence
    • Fingerprints, DNA evidence, shoeprints and tire treads, soil, and splatters
  • ANALYSIS
    • Write-up of everything

Although this course is for Crime Busters Div B, most of the material is in fact very similar to that for Forensics Div C. Because of that, we will also be including some information that is necessary for Forensics for those of you who go on to Div C
