Climate Change and Health Working Group

  • To understand and quantify the impact of climate and climate change on human health
  • Evaluate interventions (win-win solutions) which aim to improve human health and mitigate climate change, in particular solutions towards climate-resilient, sustainable and healthy food systems

Climate change and planetary boundaries

  • The exceeding of planetary boundaries affects us all, but not equally: disadvantaged and marginalised population groups in all regions of the world are most affected by these impacts, even though they have contributed least to their creation.
  • The cumulative scientific evidence is unequivocal: Climate change is a threat to human well-being and planetary health. Any further delay in concerted anticipatory global action on adaptation and mitigation will miss a brief and rapidly closing window of opportunity to secure a livable and sustainable future for all. The same can be said for other planetary boundaries

Agroforestry as and adaptation measure

  • Agroforestry : A land use system involving the deliberate integration of woody plants (trees) with crops and /livestock on the same land.

  • Its both a mitigation and adaptation measure
  • Moreover, it is a multi-layer and dynamic process
  • High possibility of adaptation and applicability

Nu-Tree: a feasibility study

  • Integrating nutrition and health into agroforestry projects in sub-Saharan Africa
  • What is the current extent of integration of nutrition and health aspects into past/on-going agroforestry projects?

  • What is needed to better integrate nutrition and health aspects into future agroforestry projects?

    • How could implementing organizations/institutions better evaluate the impact of their activities?Concept, project design, tools for measurement…

  1. Review and synthesize existing evidence of the links between agroforestry and nutrition/health in past and ongoing projects
  1. Network and bring together key stakeholders in two workshops: discuss review results, collect knowledge, identify barriers regarding nutrition/health within agroforestry projects
  1. Combine outputs from 1. and 2. in a participatory way to develop (and disseminate) a conceptual framework and roadmap to guide incorporation (and evaluation) of health/nutrition aspects in future agroforestry projects

Conclusions

  • Urgent efforts are required to keep the earth system within the planetary boundaries
  • Interlinked measures are required to keep the systems in balance and avoid over shooting
  • Agroforestry provides a possibility to enhance health and nutrition, while ensuring stability of ecosystems
  • More policies are required to further develop such dynamic measures.

Action and reflection points

  • Consider the role of agroforestry in sustainable agriculture and how it aligns with the goal of meeting nutritional needs while preserving the environment.
  • Reflect how to promote interdisciplinary collaboration among students from various fields of study to brainstorm and implement interlinked measures for maintaining ecological balance.
  • Think of a similar initiative as the NuTree project: how can you transfer their approach to your context?
