T: Now that you have practiced B-Roll filming, let’s continue on with our Making Our Plan worksheet by learning more about B-Roll, specifically Scene Work and the use of a Storyboard in Pre-Production.We will also continue to explore relationship skills by discussing how vulnerability can support building trust and strong relationships.

What is Scene Work?

Process of re-creating an action or event for the sake of the story. It is a type of b-roll but it is staged.

Dr. Kirkland’s Story

T: Scene work is the process of re-creating an action or event for the sake of the story, it is a type of b-roll but it is staged.

T:Let’s watch an example of Dr. David Kirkland from the documentary Defining US and his reminisces on life as a youth who experience homelessness and hunger. Note the B-Roll that is staged and be prepared to share out what you see.

[Take answers on what they noticed, which parts, were re-created. Go over the most relevant parts with the whole class. For example - What was the opening shot - student walking down the hallway; Topic and Focus - Dr. Kirkland’s experience being homeless and its impact on his education and life; Who did they script - blurred image of student, teacher, interspersed with the interview of Dr. Kirkland in the present day; scenes that show him as a youth walking through an overpass, in detention, etc] .

T: This scene is a great example with a clear beginning, middle and end. Would you say it follows the narrative story structure? What about linear structure, with the re-enactment happening in the order of real events? [likely so given the info the viewer has, interspersed with the adult interview]

T: Let’s take a look at a tool in your workbook that helped the Defining US production team on this scene lay it out visually. They used something called a Storyboard.

Let’s look at the example used for the scene. [display it for students]

[Take a few minutes to have students share what they saw on the storyboard example and compare it to the video. Did it match the video footage that they saw? Give examples. What else did they notice? Examples may include the drawings are very basic, use of stick figures, some words or short phrases, shots are captured in “frames”]

T: The purpose is not to create great art but to get the scene down on paper so everyone can see it and know exactly how it will look and flow, frame to frame.

T: Welcome back! Pull up your Storyboard example and HATC Making a Plan sheet to complete the section on your own scene work for today’s session. You will also open and complete the StoryBoard template. Let’s look at numbers 3 & 4 on the Making a Plan sheet which require your assigned team member to complete the Storyboard for the scene work you will do. Reminders: Use simple drawings, stick figures are fine, Lay out the beginning, middle and end of the scene. Refer back to your Making a Plan sheet if needed.

You and your team have the remainder of the period to complete this. Fill in #3 and 4 on your Making a Plan sheet. Then open the Storyboard Template document and start laying out your reenacted scene today.

Personal Shields

Objective - practice vulnerability by sharing personal information and building connections by creating and presenting the personal shield.
Divide your shield into 4 sections and label them as follows: one thing you love, a personal strength, a favorite memory, and a future goal).
Take 7 minutes to decorate and fill in your shield.
Partner and share your shields with each other. Explain the significance of each section.

T: Let’s explore further by turning our attention to how vulnerability can build trust and communication for healthy and positive relationships. The purpose of the personal shields activity is to practice vulnerability by sharing personal information and building connections by creating and presenting the personal shield.

[Provide each student with a piece of paper or cardboard and drawing materials.]

T: Note the shield example on the slide. On your paper/cardboard, draw the shield, sections similar in size to the example. The divide the shield into four sections, where each section represents a different theme such as (one thing you love, a personal strength, a favorite memory, and a future goal). Take the next 10 minutes to decorate and fill in your shield.

T: Ok, please turn to a partner and share your shield, explaining the significance of each section. You have 2 minutes to share!
