PROPELLER SHAFT
“Propellershaftisacircularshaftwhichisusedtotransmitthe
powerorrotationalmotionfromthegearboxtothefinaldrive.”
Thepropellershaftasthenamesuggest“propelsthevehicle.”
ItalsoincludestheU-jointsandsliporsliderjointto
adjustthelengthofashaftwhenthevehicleisonbump.
Thepropellershaftisinclinedatanparticularanglefor
thelengthadjustmentwiththehelpofU-jointsandslip
joint.
Thepropellershaftperformsthefollowingtwo
functions:-
1.Toreceivethepowerfromthegearboxoutputshaft&
withoutanychangeinspeedtransmittotheinputshaft
ofthedifferentialforonwardtransmissiontotherear
axle&wheels.
2.Tocopewiththedifferenceinlinewiththelevelofthe
gearboxoutputshaft&thedifferentialinputpinion
shaft.

ofsolidorhollowcircularcrosssection
❑Toughenedandhardened:Therefore,theyare
madeofsuperiorqualitysteelandareinduction
hardened
❑Efficientlyjointed:Thereforetheyaregenerally
weldedbysubmergedarecarbondioxidewelding
process.
Requirement of Propeller Shaft
❑Dynamicallybalanced:Sincethephenomenonof
whirlingmaybecriticalathigherspeeds,therefore,
propellershaftsaretestedonelectronicbalancing
machine.
❑Reducedthrustloads:Sinceresonanceisdangerous
forthelifeofshaft.Italsotransmitsexcessive
dynamicforcetotheshaft'sendsupports,andsoits
occurrenceshouldbeavoided.

surroundingoneuniversaljointattransmissionend.

Inthistypeofpropellershaftthedriving&braking
torqueareabsorbedthroughthefronthalfoftherearleaf
spring.Hotchkissdrivearemostlyusedinallthecars&
trucksnowday.Itscheaper&givesatisfactoryresult.
TheHotchkissdriveconsistsofaleafspringanda
propellershaftwithtwouniversaljointsandonesliding
joint.Thefrontendoftheleafspringispivotedinpinof
bracketwhichisboltedtothevehicleframewhilerearend
oftheleafspringissupportedinswingingshacklewith
antifrictionbushmaterial.
