Our agenda… Kami

What is it?

How do I get on it?

What can I do with it?

How is this going to help me with my instruction?

Where can I go from here?

What is KAMI?

  • Upload a PDF, Doc, or even Slides presentation and manipulate it digitally in MANY ways (draw, annotate, type, highlight, add voice, add shapes, add videos, add images etc..)
  • Make any worksheet digital
  • Convert other files (like images of paper worksheets) to PDFs and use those within the program as well
  • Fully incorporates with Google Classroom (super easy to assign to students)

Incredibly Versatile...

01

How do I get on it?

There are several options...

  1. Right click the file in Drive and select “Open with” and then “Annotate with Kami”
  2. Download and use the Kami extension
  3. Go to www.kamiapp.com
  4. In Drive, open a PDF (which opens the preview) and Click the “Open With” dropdown menu and select “Annotate with Kami” (see next slide)

How to download extension (it should already be installed to anyone signed into their Google account)...

Important!

Google has changed the location of their “Open with Kami” button when you preview a PDF from Drive. It is sometimes a blue button on the right but is also sometimes located above the file in a drop down menu. You can open ANY PDF in Kami this way.

SLIDESMANIA.COM

7 of 40

Whenever you open and annotate something in Kami, your changes will be saved directly to that file (it may take a min to show in Drive) if it is a PDF. If it is a Doc, it will not. You will have to make a copy.

SLIDESMANIA.COM

8 of 40

If your file is a Google Doc, you can save a copy (it will create a PDF) with all your changes by clicking “Create your own copy” from the Save menu. It will automatically put it in a Google Drive file called “Kami Uploads”.

SLIDESMANIA.COM

9 of 40

Or...

You can click “Advanced Export”, and tell Kami exactly where to save or export it. You can also change the name.

SLIDESMANIA.COM

10 of 40

And then...

Once you’ve made a copy for yourself, you can click “Save Now” and even move it from this menu to a different Drive folder from the Save menu.

What if I forgot to make a copy and I want the original back?

Go to “Advanced Export” from the Save dropdown menu.

Important to know...

As of right now, you cannot “order” the shapes or text or images on a page (ie: bring to front). You cannot put text on top of a shape or an image on top of a shape as you like. Apparently they are working on an update to allow this, but there is nothing to fix this yet.

You also cannot copy and paste annotations (like a text box that you want students to type in). You can save them to your annotations bank, but that is often more complicated than simply typing something twice. You could also copy just the text, create another text box, and paste just the text into the new box.

You cannot copy an image from online and paste it. You have to save it to your computer or Drive and then insert it “Add Media”.

What does it DO?

OCR allows the text to be converted into accessible text that the student can “select” to have read to them using Select to Speak.

Use the “notes” app on your phone to scan a paper as a PDf and upload it to the Google Drive app. Click the video to see how it’s done.

See OCR in action...this video has no sound (FYI)

Feature Restrictions...in short

Don’t want students distracted by the video or drawing features? Don’t want the program to read to them? Turn certain tools off in the Google assignment!

If you want to turn it off for a few students but allow for others, just create a duplicate assignment and assign to specific students.

Don’t forget about this feature...

Great Resources!

Printable for Kids

Paper Copy

This would be a great video to demonstrate and explain Kami features to students and their parents.

Print out directions for the students to keep in their folders. This is the “Kami instructions” included when you click the option in GC.

Rather have a “book” with all of Kami’s information and guides in it? Download this PDF “Kami Handbook” and keep it as a reference guide (though, personally, I prefer to Google it.

Still hungry for more...

You can use Kami to create your own handwritten digital worksheets using the “blank” template and drawing feature. You can also use a blank Kami sheet as a digital whiteboard. I recommend buying a “drawing tablet” to make writing on a chromebook or computer MUCH easier (which can help in other programs like Jamboard, too)! Just note, however, that few drawing tablets work on Chromebooks (because you can’t download the software), but the one I use is linked in the picture to the left.

Just one more bite?

You can use Kami to create your own lessons and worksheets from scratch and include interactive videos, pictures, comments, and more!

Ok...so maybe two more bites...

Click on the images below to check out these equally awesome programs! They are similar to Kami, but they have different uses in the classroom. Trust me...they’re worth checking out,

You may want to put this in your teacher toolbox as well. PDF Candy allows you to manipulate PDFs in 44 ways. It can be a lifesaver.

And if you hit a snag...

  • Try to Google it. See if you can find a quick fix or explanation.
  • Ask your Team’s Tech Facilitator to come take a look.
  • See if your Teacher Tech Leader has any solutions.,
  • Email, call, or come see me (submit a help desk ticket, if possible please)! I will try to figure something out to get it working for you.
